we used to have a dessert at school that was a pastry base with like a thick blamange topping covered in hundreds and thousands. I would love to know what it was and what it was called, it deffinately didn't taste like blamange and held its shape when sliced????

I made it using a pastry ( sweet case) then a tin of condensed milk -caramel flavour then top with vermiciili, or you could use the Dulco Leche (sp?)caramel topping - then at least you can make a few small ones at a time - delish!! Works out about £2.20 ish though but lovely. I also use the dulco leche to make banoffie pies - mmmm

im off into town today to get peppermint essence, yeast and other bits i need to make more schooly type meals lol
i did the egg and cheese flan last night, bodged up the pastry :( turned it upside down then burnt the egg and cheese mix, it was nice... just took a bit of chewing pmsl

the cornflake cake, chocolate one, that went really soggy when i put custard on it. i think they poured the custard first then added the cake :)

I was at school in London between 1971 and 1984 and in those days schools were run by the Inner London Education Authority, I don't know if that has any bearing on things.

You posted this a long time ago, but reading your post reminded me of just how much I hated school dinners. They were IMO absolutely disgusting. My main gripe actually was that they were never hot enough. I'm not even sure if 'warm' would be accurate. They used to make me feel physically sick. But thankfully I was allowed packed lunches.

I think they are slightly better now (it does depend on the school's cooking facilities - for instance my youngest's school is supplied via the Junior school 2 miles away so there is no choice) AND both of my kids come out starving. My youngest has quite a small appetite as well so clearly doesn't eat much. Both currently have packed lunches - nicer, healthier and much cheaper. And she comes out of school in a much better mood since she's not starving.

However, my Grandma was a dinner lady and I can tell you that firstly she knows how to cook delicious meals (Italian background perhaps?) and that both my parents went to her school and loved the meals. They usually had seconds. I couldn't be paid to eat seconds when I was at school! That was in the 50's & 60's. By the time I went to school in the 70's/80's, standards had possibly slipped?
