When I was in school we could tell the day by the food on offer;
Monday was always - spam, smash and baked beans,
followed by Dig & Splash!
This must have been the cheapest dessert ever, MSErs. A thin layer of pastry was baked like a tile, spread with jam and sprinkled with coconut!
The chocolate puddings were good, though, but seemed to be served only as a rare treat.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

This thread is bringing back memories lol...not all good..
One I remember was 'drain pipes and black beetles' (macaroni pudding and raisins). Also semolina with rosehip syrup.
I went to a small village school all the waste food was put into a bucket, this was collected to feed pigs.2012

Does anyone know a recipe for that chocolate cake that was baked in a big rectangle tray then when they scooped it out it had a chocolate sauce underneath it? i absolutly loved it! lol i really wana know how to make it, can any1 help?
Magic Chocolate Pudding
It is a favourite of my kids and so easy
Make up a Chocolate Sponge and put into a quite deep dish
Then the secret is to put equal amounts of brown sugar and cocoa into a jug add boiling water and mix well
Pour over the sponge - looks yukky at this stage but don't stir it in !
Put in the oven and the sauce sinks to the bottom as the sponge bakes and the result is a lovely thick gooey chocolate sauce at the bottom of the dishBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I love this thread! Does anyone remember bilberry tart. It was served with merigue on top served with custard. On the whole school dinners were great.The worst dinner was the thin runny mince with onion followed with prunes in semolina, yuck! Oh, just remembered the yellow fish, it stunk the school out. Happy days!0

it was a pie or tart with pastry and a sort of creamy caramely butterscotchy filling it might have been called gypsy tart, does anyone know the recipe or even what i am talkiing about? we had it at school in the 70s not sure if it may have had some sort of dessicated co!!!! sprinkled on it or if i confuse it with another sort of tart
i have never seen it any shops and i used to love it if anyone has a recipe i am sure it cant be too expensive to make, it must be some form of burnt sugar i would think.
thank you0 -
