  • Do you always haggle on prices or do you just paid was is listed. I'm not good at haggling but seeing the prices everyone pays for things makes me think that I'm getting ripped off at carboot sales. Can anyone recommend the best way to haggle? :)

i cant haggle... really just cant bring myself to do it, but i also dont want to pay full price for anything! lol
so i spot the stuff and send in my OH, he usually asks the price and then asks if thats the best they can do, or "is that your lowest price"?
and then... and this is the most important bit DONT SPEAK AGAIN UNTIL THEY HAVE.... dont know why it works but it does...

or if its say £2, he will say "will you take a pound for it?" and we always give the item a good looking over, spot anything wrong with it... quite often if they wont reduce the price he gets something else thrown in! (hes got such a nerve! lol)

    its all mind games,
for example someone was selling a gromit (from wallace and gromit) bag, his body is the bag, zip up his back, legs dangling etc, it has its tags and i wanted it for my DD,
they wanted £2.50 for it and were not for budging on the price til OH pointed out the dirty mark i was trying to get off (unsuccessfully) with my thumb, and they knocked £1 off it, we all know full well i will get that mark off with a bit of effort at home... but they dont want to lose the sale.
  • Well today was a first!

Been a car booter for over 15 years and never seen a punch up before!

Basically a 'lady' was at the front of a stall (which was her own) and states she spotted this guy stealing an item. He then punchd her on the jaw, she punched back and started shouting. At this point it was clear that the 'lady' was in fact a man dressed as a woman. They must have aimed a good 5-6 punches at each other, glasses went flying and everyone around just froze and stared. The 'lady was ranting 'look at him, look at his face the dirty rotten thief, over and over again"

I was with my daughter so walked away.

I have just woken up as I was having a strange dream about stealing peoples glasses so it must have disturbed me more than I thought!

So beware folks, you never now what you are going to spot at a car boot!

I love to wander around the car boots and could buy so much if I let myself get carried away. So many bargains, but my sensible head says 'you don't need it!'.... but now I have a 9mth grand daughter :j I can let myself go a bit.

There is so much to choose from for this age group, .so I can still walk away and wait for a bargain. Today's was a Leapfrog Learning Table - I saw a few - the first two were £6 and £8 - the third one I got for £2.50.

Good things come to those who wait!

Got the Playskool Giraffe rocker the other week for £2 too.

Hope you all got some bargains too this week.
  • Hi everyone. I love reading this thread! I don't go to bootsales (not sure of any in my area really) but I pop into charity shops every now and again to have a look (I collect vintage costume jewellery and bags). Yesterday I got a fab 'Pringle of Scotland' coat for £8! But nothing else out of the other 4 shops I visited!

I popped into a community shop (charity shop but due to planning laws or something....) which funds day trips for oap of the village where my mum lives. Was thinking load of ole ..... till i reached the books.

I came away with about 20 paranormal romances i love to read them then resell. 30p each plonked huge pile on desk and they instantly offered me discount for buying so many then i put my boyfriends books to the pile i think we had about 30 between us they said £6 as we had made room for more books on their shelves. I am going back as soon as i have read this lot. Already put 3 excellent reads on play/amazon and that type book is usually a goer and not 1p so will end up quids in for more books. I get books where i live and they tend to start at £1 in charity shops so well chuffed with these.

Went to the local boot sale yesterday morning and bought
a couple of big old rolling pins for £5,
an iron mortar & pestle set £3,
set of medium size ramekins(ideal for individual dessert, souffle or making pate) £1,
lovely complete china tea set for dd to play with £1,
royal worcester evasham oval casserole dish £1(gutted that I left the bigger one now)
a few little flow blue plates and victorian cruets from a guy who had everything at 50p or £1
a gift set of 3 blue and white saucers with linen scented candles 50p
a bavarian yodelling rag doll £1:rolleyes:

then went to local charity shop and got a load of hornsea tapestry design items for 10p-50p each item.

DD bought herself a few things at the boot sale too, toys and pencils etc,she spent less than £2 all day,the best value buy was a couple of tubs of bubbles for 40p each which we have both played with for hours.
