  • Just a point about vouchers, in the present financial situation, be careful that the vouchers could end up being worthless. Not always easy to do but asking for cash might be the safer option.
  • Congratulations! I think back 23 years and we got 4 toasters, 6 vases, and 3 Irons!
A good idea is to ask for shop vouchers - Argos etc then you can choose what you want.
I couldn't be with out my breadmaker, slo cooker, hand blender, hand mixer, pressure cooker, copper bottomed saucepans or stainless steel wok (I can prepare anything in that)
you could also ask for measuring cups and spoons a few cookery books, colander, sieves, and a good set of enamel roasting pans will last you for years
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

  • I cant do without a food processor. It makes pastry fast, minces and chops almost anything - I dont have one right now and its awful, its so, so bad...no one got me one for xmas. :(

Also agree with a slow cooker - but get a good one (not the cheapest) as sometimes the lids can be a problem with steam/water escaping and going all over the place, and also plastic lids can crack after alot of use.

A stick blender - I use mine every day! I never thought I would, but I do.

i got married in 2002 we already had a home so didn't think there was anything we needed. but i mentioned to mil i liked the idea of a bread maker. didn't think anythign of it and she bought us 1. well it sat in the box for about 6 months. then i tried it and then it went back in box. if only i knew about this site back in 02 so from when i've discovered this site 05 the bread maker has been worth it's weight in gold. i can make so much. it has a timer which i still haven't worked out, lol.

also my 2 slow cookers ( i have a smaller one and a bigger one which takes a whole chicken. if you want it to do chickens i'd recommend an oval one. i've a 4.5 slowcooker and i can get a 2.4 chicken) .

also lock and lock tub's. there idea for flour ( i do have some pic's on here of my cupboards lined with lock and lock tub's.

tubs which you can freeze meals in and then also cook in. even items like the foil dishes are fab as no washing up. althought u might not want them as a pressie. ( i would but i'm odd)

    maybe lakeland vouchers .

freeze the extra and serve it another day - if you go on to have kids the bigger slow cooker will be a boon.

I'm veggie and find the veg goes to mush if I freeze it after SCing it. But might well work for meaty people :)

just had a thought a nice A4 folder, laminater and ream of paper. then one thing i do is print off all recipes i like , laminate them then store them in folder. and cause i'm sucha mucky pup the recipe is then wipe proof. i have the tesco value lamiater cost abotu £10 back in 07 not sure if you can still get them but it is fantastic. again someone might not wanna buy you something like this so could ask for vouchers.

I have several plug in dimmer switches for table, bedside and floor lamps, I find they're really useful and wouldn't be without them. Hand blender stick with chopper attachment (for pastry making and cakes) is easier to store than a full size food processor, silicon baking sheets are useful, cake cooling trays, pot stands, a good knife sharpener, those silicone sheets to line cake tins and the bottom of your oven are labour saving (but not very glamourous). I love my electronic scales that weigh in grams or ounces, and the measurer that gives cups sizes. Fish knives and forks, larger serving dishes and stands, loaf tins (better than round cake tins)............
  • Personaly can't live without my Bissell carpet cleaner. It is fantastic, ok its a bit expensive (about £99 for a basic model) but will definately pay for itself. Perhaps this is something that people could club together for or get with vouchers. Just a thought.
The problem with common sense is its not very common:rotfl:

A few things that I can't do without are Le Creuset casserole dishes (the 18cm and the 24cm size should cover most needs), a handheld blender (I've got one like this which means it doubles as a mini food processor and whisk), some decent saucepans and some lock & lock storage boxes. But if you're short on storage space I would consider asking for money/vouchers - vouchers for somewhere like Sainsburys/Tesco/M&S give you the flexibility to spend them on housewares, clothes or food, and they aren't about to go into administration anytime soon, but to be on the safe side I'd stick with big retailers like those three.
