With the cheaper basmati rice from supermarkets its generally the case that they are "produce of more than one country" , so it will be a mix of older rice, broken rice, lower quality rice all together in one bag.

    Not necessarily...

Older basmati rice tastes better - the more aged it is, the more fragrant.

My Fiance is from south Asia and deems Tesco value Basmati a good 'un :p

Tesco have Rozana basmati rice reduced to £10.99 for 10kg until 09/06 - typical, I bought it on 19/05 for £14.34, a day before the price reduction icon9.gif
I'm going to get another one anyway as we go through rice like nobodies business. It is very nice and stays firm, without breaking up too much. hth
sorry to quote myself :o but this is available in store as well (stock availability permiting!) they also have the 5kg bags for £4.99, so managed to get one of those :j

Tesco own brand 1kg Basmati rice is now £1.47 in my local store (cf. Tesco Value Basmati £1.50/kg, usually the cheapest)

Massive yellow sacks of Pakistani basmati currently available on special offer at Tesco - £20 for 20kg, which is the best price I've seen on pure basmati for ages, including at the Asian supermarkets.

They also have a different brand of Indian basmati in a purple cloth bag at the same price by weight, £10 for 10kg.

I forget the brand names, neither of which I was familiar with, but at 33% less than the standard basic prices other people have been charging, it's got to be worth a look. I bought the 20kg sack and used some last night; seems perfectly nice. As I live on my own, it's going to last me over a year I should think :)
