what is the shelf life of the big bags of rice? As I have read about people buying large bags and after a couple of weeks having weevils in them. Is this an urban myth?, as we eat quite a lot of brown and basmati rice and would like to buy in bigger quantities.0

The Asian ladies I work with said it improves with age so they keep a bag under the stairs for a year before using it.Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me0 -
As long as you keep it off the floor, and the bag clipped securely inside a plastic box/bin then you shouldn't get any problems. Store it like flour!
Unless you've already got a mouse/weevil problem then storing rice won't be an issue.0 -
Ta for the tip :-)
Edit: just been to look it's "A Fusion of Long Grain Rice & Basmati Rice" which means it's basmati cross bred (often accidentally) with long grain stickier rice. Still nice but not pure basmati.
I've just had a good sniff, and I think it is slightly more 'ricey' less basmati-ish iykwim. I made some pilau last night and I have to say that it is still quite nice, but I never cook my rice absolutely plain, I always add some spices, onions or stock so maybe I'm not noticing if it is slightly less fragrant than pure basmati?
frogglet, I decant my rice with a funnel into those large3l water bottles and store in the understairs cupboard, I've never had a problem.0 -
Slightly OT but Tesco are selling 1kg of long grain for 50p as clearance - picked up 4 packs today. Chilli + rice for tea!0

I've been 'cutting' tesco basmati with value basmati for a while now. I use 1/3 value with 2/3 own brand. In this ratio we can't tell the difference but when I made it half and half we could. Not much money saved but a little bit!0

Surely you mean near to Ashton? Been in that place myself a few times - decent prices on stuff that can be expensive in most supermarkets. Tandoori spice mix is usually good value and fresh garlic & ginger are cheaper than supermarkets.0 -
No idea!
Just going on the OL postcode
I wish there were any cash & carry type places near me!0 -
