Allegedly around 11% of private sector now have final salary schemes with very few of these now open to new entrants.
The majority of schemes are provided by the banking industry and the privatised utilities (the latter of which also benefits, as I understand it, from a government guarantee which was drawn up at the time of privatisation).0 -
oh dear!
I am a psychologist and I work in the NHS. I don't want to work in private practice, where the work would be easier, I'd get perks ( I get none, now apart from the pension) and pay would be higher.
I believe that everyone deserves help regardless of income and I don't just work for money anyway. Should I think of myself only and move to the private sector then? I do also often help people to stay at work, get into work when otherwise their mental health would prevent this. Does this not help the economy at all?
I did not opt for this career on financial grounds as I would be pretty awful at it, if I had. Also I pay taxes and spend my money in non-public sector shops and businesses! My favourite subliminal message is;0 -
You have a field day on here'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0

I'll explain what I'm thinking. The massive increase in spending at the NHS has produced no where near the returns it should have. Money is wasted left right and centre. What is going to happen as the population gets proportionally older with even less people in work supporting them?I did not opt for this career on financial grounds as I would be pretty awful at it, if I had. Also I pay taxes and spend my money in non-public sector shops and businesses!
As my dad said after working shifts for 30 years,
"I wonder how many peoples kids I've paid to bring up from my tax?" He was out in all weathers when people on the dole were lying in their bed expecting the state to feed, water and house them. We know a good number of families who have never worked and don't have even the slightest intention of doing so either.
That really annoys folk (it aint just me!)
I'm in the same boat as my dad, I'm lucky I've got a good job that pays well, but now it's my turn to bring up the great unwashed, courtesy of my taxes.
But I'm nasty and bitter according to some posters. I really don't think so. I should be able to enjoy some of the fruits of my hard labour (and I have worked hard) without subsidising other people. Now that would be fair!0 -

They'd get the money from sales of sarcasm and humour detectors.0 -

What about the millions of low paid private sector workers who are subsidising your pension? They don't get your cast iron benefits, but they do PAY for them!!!
Woopydoo, you pay 6 % into your pension! The employer (the Council) pays in 18%!!!! (see below) This is absolutely outrageous.
Here is an exerpt from Aberdeen City Councils pension page about how they calculate pensions. The payments are increasing from the Council! From 2.5 times employers contributions to 3 times, by the end of this year!
NOBODY in the private sector gets that. and that goes for cleaners, bar staff and the millions of other "low paid" staff.
You are getting away with murder and you should at least realise you are.
<lol> haha your pensions rubbish<lol>
Don't blame the public sector because you lost out...0
