Public sector monster needs to be tamed

    I have worked in the NHS all my working life and I think its now worse that I've ever known it. People I work with are lazy, inefficient and always trying to get more staff to do none existent jobs. In addition, Agenda for Change has resulted in a lot of people (though not all) earning a lot more for the same job, this has a huge impact on final salary pension costs. Also, a lot of people take early retirement/redundancy with an enhanced pension and then go back to another job in the NHS straight away so they are earning a salary and drawing a pension, how can this be right? Most people directly concerned with patient care do a fantastic job, but the managers and hangers on are just an expensive waste of space in my opinion!

    Sounds a pretty damning indictment of the system.

    How many teachers and police have also taken early retirement and then gone back into same job at a higher wage?

    Only good thing is that Clown's fiscal drag will be dragging them into higher rate tax bracket.

    I hear the same. Work to rule has been reinforced by the policies of this govt, especially Agenda 4 Change. This has seen huge increases in salaries, special rules for overtime, missed meals etc. Had the pension situation been sorted out at the same time then the govt could argue that it had struck a bargain and pleased both sides. However no such deal was struck and a labour govt will not square up to the unions and say what needs to be said.

    In northern ireland new employees must stay till 65 and not 60 anymore. also, i have been in civil service 4 years and people joining earn same amount as i do. no rewards in civil service for experience. rant over.

    Woopee. You've got a guaranteed, final salary pension subsidised by the taxpayer that kicks in at 65! (unlike most of the public sector staff already employed retiring at 60, thats if they don't take early retirement)
    Lucky you! Mine is invested in the stockmarket and I won't be retiring till 68/69!(dependant on how the economy does). In the meantime I'll top up your pension shall I???

    I've worked in the public, private and volunatry sectors, some very large organisations, some little more than one man bands.

    In terms of efficiencies there's little to chose, they were all inefficent, where they were inefficient has varied immensely.

    In terms of efficiencies there's little to chose, they were all inefficent, where they were inefficient has varied immensely.

    Thing with private sector is
    a) You don't have to buy their product if inefficiency makes it too expensive when compared to competition
    b) If there's too much inefficiency, company goes out of business.

    Unfortunately same parameters do not apply to (majority of ?) public sector organisations

    How do you compare a soldier with a security guard.

    A nurse with a health & safety officer

    A machine operative with a dinner lady

    etc etc

    Most vaguely comparable jobs in public sector appear to be paid at least as well as in private sector

    Yes and No, 'junior admin' posts I would say probably pay better in the public sector tbh, security gaurds/dinner ladies/ cleaners/refuse collectors are all private sector staff as are many housing benefit staff previously employed by councils.

    Who is going to be paying the pensions of all these public sector workers? There's going to be a big brain drain as people seek pastures new where they are paid better and not taxed to the hilt. A lot of the people at the bottom of the rung are not paying into the system, just depending on it which puts further strain on the system. I imagine in 15-20 years time there will be very few people who will want the 'priviledge' of having to pay more tax, work longer hours with no pension for crap pay, pay exhoribitant costs to live in a tiny shack surrounded by chavs with horrible weather to boot. I think the great ship Brittania is sinking fast.
