I don't have long hair and never have, even as a child it wasn't that long, as my hair is quite fine. I used to work with a woman who was around 35 and she had long hair, nearly down to the base of her spine and it was a damn mess (i'm not suggesting yours is) but it was sort of frizzy and awful rather than shiny and nice. It was in the style that a five year old girl would have, no style to it, just hung there. She would look so so much better if she'd had it cut but I still don't think she has, some 6 years later.

I'm sitting here, trying to forget my problems..... and remembering that last week, my sister in law told me that she was having her hair cut into a short bob as she is going to be 50 next year.

I've got long hair - quite blonde as well (I dye it) and I am 47. I regularly trim the ends and fringe, and I'm told it looks ok. One of the reasons I have never had it cut into a style that needs any upkeep is the cost!!! My OH tells me I can still get away with it....but does anyone here honestly think there is an age for a woman when very long youthful hair is not on?
have your hair any way you like - it's yours! Regardless of age!
don't let convention dictate what you do with your hair!

p.s. my hair yoyos from waist length to elfin crop and growing in between!

I had no idea, only "young" women were "supposed" to have long hair, but now that i think about it, most older woman I know have shorter hair. I've also always found short hair unattractive.

It sounds horrible to reach a certain age and then be suddenly deemed unattractive. It sounds like "right, I've hit 40, Must be a frump now". Where did this short hair thing for oldies come from?

Thats the thing though, long hair on mature women can be ageing rather than youthful.

I reached retirement 2 years ago and am keeping my shoulder-length bob because I like it. It's my hair, I'm comfortable with it, no-one has made any adverse comments (and my granddaughters can be very honest about my style!) and I can wear it in various styles to suit the occasion. Oh, and it's light chestnut brown - with a little assistance  .

It really depends on how self-confident you feel with the style you like. I firmly believe you have to please you sometimes, not do things for other people, or you can lose your own style/personality. Good luck whatever you choose to do :)

I would not class a shoulder length bob as long or even medium. When I say I had mine chopped off on Monday, it was to a shoulder length bob too.

I think medium hair is below shoulders & long, tipping down for the bum.

I've never seen my mum with long hair, even when I was little. It's always been a variation on the same style - shortish and permed. I'm 41 and she's been at me to get a perm for years now. Just like she's always been at me to get my ceilings artexed! My hair is shoulder length, and i'd feel older than my years if I got it cut any shorter. I'd feel like an adult! I do think there'll be a time when I feel the need to get it cut. My sister is 47 and her hair is streaked and almost the same length as mine but she definitely doesn't look like mutton dressed as lamb. She looks years younger than what my mum did at the same age.

Good grief - I'm 44 this year and my hair is down my back and I wouldn't dream of getting it chopped - EVER!!!

I get it trimmed and coloured regularly and it is in lovely condition. I never have it just hanging loose but either clip it our of my face or put it up and it is so much easier to manage - when I had it short years ago - I always had to faff around with tongs or straighteners to get rid of the sticky up bits. Now I just wash it and let it dry naturally whilst I'm working at home in the evening, then put it up in a scrunchy and it goes all wavy and not using a dryer means it stays shiny.

Now I've read this I've realised I don't know anyone my age or older with long hair - RAFLMOA!! Well I do like to be different!:D
