At what age should a woman get her long hair cut...

I'm sitting here, trying to forget my problems..... and remembering that last week, my sister in law told me that she was having her hair cut into a short bob as she is going to be 50 next year.
I've got long hair - quite blonde as well (I dye it) and I am 47. I regularly get the ends, longer layers and fringe trimmed. One of the reasons I have never had it cut into a style that needs any upkeep is the cost!!! My OH tells me I can still get away with it....but does anyone here honestly think there is an age for a woman when long, 'youthful' hair is not on?

There is a woman that I know who has extremely long hair and she is in her 70's (mind you it suits her because facially she's a bit witchy if you know what I mean:eek: ). Guess it depends on how you feel about your hare. I have a longish bob (shoulder length) and keep trying to grow my hair long. I have to get it dyed occasionally because I get grey roots but only at the front otherwise the rest of my hair is my natural copper colour.
If you feel happy with long hair and it looks nice why cut it?

I agree with Horace that it all depends how you feel, my hair was quite long until 5 weeks ago I got it cut into a shoulder length bob the day before my 39th birthday  I just felt that I was getting too old to have long hair, but that was my personal choice and feeling, so at the end of the day, it is up to you how you feel.0

If you still like the look it gives you, if it's still in good condition, if you don't mind the time it takes to wash, then why have it cut?

I had mine cut short 16 years ago this Easter, when the youngest was about a year old. I dithered about it for ages, worried that I'd hate it, and I had it done at a charity day so that if I DID hate it at least the money would have gone to a good cause.
For me, it was literally a weight off my mind. Faster to wash, suited me better, made me feel good. BUT nothing would have stopped me growing it again if I hadn't liked it.
and I do miss the fact that there's now not a lot I can do with my hair to make it look different. When it was long I could put it up, have a pony tail, make pigtails , plait it into tiny plaits while wet and have it wavy, and pull strands back back from my face with a pretty clip.
But those are small regrets.
One thing I would recommend is finding a way of putting virtual haircuts on your face to see what suits you. This was early days, but I had a session where they took a photo, 'shaved' all my hair off, and put different basic hairstyles on. I had a classic bob with fringe, and looked just like my little sister. I had a slightly feathered cut in a darker shade, and my big sister looked back at me - the stylist tried to lighten the colour a little, and it went grey, then purple! :rotfl: So I know what my big sister will look like when she goes grey.
I then knew what I DIDN'T want (a fringe!) and it took a couple more weeks before I found what I did want (a teensy fringey bit cut really really short to get some hair off my face).
Had the same cut ever since. No plans to change ...
Actually, I'm not sure I think of very long hair as 'youthful'. I remember my grandma, I still have some of her pins she used to pin her plaits to her head in that coronet style ... :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I think it all depends how youthful your face is and clothes style.
In Waitrose the other day there was a girl (i thought) with her back to me very petite with very girly clothes and long blonde hair when she turned round she must of been 50 plus and it was a shock.0 -
My grandma is 65 and she's got black hair with very few greys down to the base of her spineSealed Pot Challenge Member 1216 -

I have long hair down to my waist with a sprinkling of full length grey streaks and I'm not thinking of getting my hair cut yet. If I did it wouldn't go above my shoulders.
I enjoy wearing it up or down and love having that choice.
edit: I'm going to be long and grey before I decide on a short hair cut.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

I personally think it should be no longer than shoulder length after very late thirties/forties for most women. And men. long hair is very seldom flattering after this age.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

my hair was very long until last year at 36 I just felt bored of having long hair, so I went to the hairdressers & said I want it cut short! so it went to a shoulder length bob. since then it has gone shorter still- to a graduated bob just below my ear. I love it & everyone comments how much younger I look now!!!Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the world together."

Didn't think there was an age limit to having long hair.
For the last year or so, I've chosen to grow mine as I've had it short. I figured it would be my last chance to have nice long flowing locks. So, unless it falls out, I'll be growing it until I decide to stop and keep it trimmed.0 -
Mine has been long or below shoulders anyway most of my life. I had it short for about 2 years.
I also think there comes an age when very few women (Cindy Crawford types only) can get away with long hair & even mid length is iffy.
SO on Monday I had mine chopped off to shoulder length. I like it. I think I might be at that age (I'm 41) when long hair can make me look a bit mutton (trying to be a young girl:o ). IMHO:D0
