"In addition to the changes listed above, with effect from 6 May 2009, any charges incurred by the Society on behalf of our customers from our card scheme provider, including Visa, or other body or institution, MAY be passed on to our customers and debited from their account (subject to 30 days' notice). This change will affect credit and debit cards.

I have a feeling that ATM charges are next (banks have absorbed the LINK fee from other banks ATM's)

    I'm not so sure.

If RBS and LloydsTSB-HBOS started charging each other's customers for using their cash points that would mean tax payers being charged to use cash points that they owned more than 50% of. Surely even this government wouldn't allow that, at least not until after the next election.

If they're not going to be able to charge with their share of the ATMs in the country, then who is going to be able to without losing all their customers to them?

If you look at the wording NW have used they could charge customers not using NW cash machines (all the banks charge each other for using the LINK network).

Going back to the OP, this is a sign of things to come from all the banks for credit cards/current accounts.

Having the legal ability to do it is irrelevent. If the two big banking groups won't be implementing it and Nationwide does then large numbers of their customers will just change who they bank with.

It will be interesting to see what effect the changes discussed earlier in the thread have. When I heard, I was going to cancel my account with them until I looked into it further. A lot of people will get the hump and not bother checking it.

Bristoleedsfan- I'm not sure about your comment about a godgiven right not to be charged. Yes, I know other countries charge for just about every transaction, & UK dont, but lets just get this into prospective. Bank charges mean only one thing- The bank charges ME to deposit my salary with them, They charge ME to keep some of my money in the bank, They charge ME to check how much I have in this account, & They charge ME to draw MY money out. And I'm supposed to be grateful that I have not had to pay for this godgiven right up to now?

But it is a perk. Nationwide are only passing on the charge set by Visa: they are still not adding on the 2-3% commission charge that nearly all other banks and building societies charge. They will still be cheaper to use than nearly every other card, so yes, they are right to promote it as a perk.
  • A lot of people myself included actually don't use Nationwide as their day to day account, but keep it to use overseas. So it would be no big loss to them now if that perk has been withdrawn. It was the last USP for the flexaccount, and frankly yet again shows Nationwide doesn't understand or care about its customers.

Which is why it has been lost to the genuine customers, its all the people like yourself who only use it for holidays that have caused it to be taken away. They weren't making any money from you and they are in business, cuts have to be made in these times and this is one of them.
