That overdraft rate sneaked its way in as I dont remember getting any notification on it and never realised the interest rate was 0%!

Used to be my main bank account but thankfully I only use it now for going abroad but will look elsewhere now.

    What shareholders?

Nationwide is a mutual - it has members not shareholders.

Your obviously lucky enough to have never seen the advert, probably one of the most annoying ads of all time ;-) Reverse psychology, Nationwide were advertising A N Other Bank, justifying their foreign charges because they had to pay for the shareholders bubbly ;-))

After joining this site and thanks to Martin, I have become far more financially aware, even though I used to work in finance !!!! I have learned it is not in my financial interest to remain loyal to any bank and after 30 years with Nationwide, have finally convinced OH to change his main bank account ..... and keep changing.

I dont suppose Nationwide will suffer that much from their latest stunt, probably 99% of the population dont read this site, and will remain with their bank either through loyalty or apathy. Whenever I try to tell non-MSE's they could be getting better deals from another bank, I usually get "Oh but I have always been with my bank, like mum and dad before me"
    Grrrrrrrr ;-)

Surely they could have kept absorbing the cost and use the 5.00% APR increase in the overdraft rate to offset it??

The reducing of Flexaccount interest to 0%, the increase of the O/D rate to 17.9%, the passing on of Visa fees for using the cards abroad....

... They can't exactly use "Proud to be different" now can they?!?

I'm going to use a Lloyds TSB Travel Money card that I got for free with my new LTSB account to use in Spain.....

    ... bye Flexaccount.....

Flex account card is free to use in Spain, even after May

I know, but I'll use the LTSB one out of spite for NW. :p
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

I simply use the card that is cheapest to use.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Im going abroad at the end of March until the end of July. US, AUS, NZ, HK etc
I was going to get this but when I went into Nationwide, they mentioned this.

What I want is a card which i can use to withdraw local currency with from ATMs around the world. I want a card which gives me the current exchange rate so I dont lose money, and has the cheapest fees.

Is the Nationwide Flex Debit card still this?

    Thanks

So? That's how they choose to live. Not every one is interested in hunting down the last penny. Personally, I can think of much better things to do with my time than signing up to Alliance & Leicester just to get £100 or whatever.

I am fairly disappointed in Nationwide for this but I'll keep it as long as it is cheaper than other cards and free in Europe.

Quite. A bit like why many people vote Labour.

Gutted - this could be the straw that breaks the camel's back in seeing my return home :(

Am currently in Oz and have been for 18 months but recession has hit everywhere and am struggling to find work - they're keeping jobs for Australian Citizens and residents amid media complaints of 'migrant workers' stealing jobs. I can't get any form of credit here due to not being a resident and have been living off my NW credit card and O/D in order to pay rent and buy food. These additional charges plus the increased overdraft rate are going to f*** things right up.

Nice of Nationwide to actually let its customers know - I've had an account with them since I was 11 and stuck by them as their e-savings and ISAs aren't bad rates (evern if they're not quite top) and I've spent lots of time living o/s and travelling.

Don't really know what to do... Are any other accounts better? Can I even open a new account whilst overseas? Probably not.
