I really trumpeted Nationwide to all my family & friends when they go abroad. It is a boon not paying debit & credit card charges- but what do they do???? THEY ARE STARTING TO CHARGE NOW. Credit cards from 1st May & debit cards from 1st June. I'm now on the lookout for a card that doesn't charge. I really think Nationwide has shot itself in the foot.
Very shocked by this decision by nationwide but hoping that they won't introduce a transaction fee as well especially as I am about to head off traveling for a year next month.
A little bit miffed about the lack on info in the branch about this. I've been encouraging my parents to get a flexaccount set up as they generally travel a lot, which they finally did on Monday. What really annoys me is that the guy in Nationwide knew that they were setting it up mainly for holiday funds and using it abroad but never mentioned that they will be charging soon!
It's still a low rate but once these things are set in motion they tend to get more expensive.0 -
What shareholders?least that should be an end to that annoying TV ad and the shareholders bubbly ;-)
Nationwide is a mutual - it has members not shareholders.
And the fact that lots of people where using it as their second or third account only for going on holiday meant it was probably a loss leader, or would become one once the Nationwide has it's current account contract terms scrutinised.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

So it would be no big loss to them now if that perk has been withdrawn. It was the last USP for the flexaccount, and frankly yet again shows Nationwide doesn't understand or care about its customers.
But by your own assumption, a lot of people are using the Flexaccounts solely for the foreign transactions. That hardly qualifies you as a customer, more a user - you're costing them money. To say they don't understand or care about their customers is a bit far flung. Do you honestly believe that the majority of their customers, excluding those such as yourself, travel internationally frequently? What would William Shatner do?0 -
No, they're not. All they're doing is passing on the Visa charge that they have been absorbing for years.I really trumpeted Nationwide to all my family & friends when they go abroad. It is a boon not paying debit & credit card charges- but what do they do???? THEY ARE STARTING TO CHARGE NOW.
Nearly all other cards pass that 1% on and add more to boot - it was usually 2.75%, now 2.99 or 3% is becoming the norm - even within Europe.0 -
Surely they could have kept absorbing the cost and use the 5.00% APR increase in the overdraft rate to offset it??
The reducing of Flexaccount interest to 0%, the increase of the O/D rate to 17.9%, the passing on of Visa fees for using the cards abroad....
... They can't exactly use "Proud to be different" now can they?!?
I'm going to use a Lloyds TSB Travel Money card that I got for free with my new LTSB account to use in Spain.....
... bye Flexaccount.....I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0 -
Hi,
Am I right thinking that the Nationwide Debit card is still the ONLY card not charging fee on Cash withdrawal abroad (and still will be even after the 1% change)? This is probably my main use, rather than card transactions...
Thanks0 -
Correct, they will only charge the Visa fee, not load on more 'conversion' charges.0

I can see a good case for ditching the Nationwide Credit Card, although there is only one card - Post Office - that is better for foreign spending and open to new applicants. The debit card is still the best for foreign cash and is well worth keeping. Where Nationwide has really let down its members is its very poor interest rates on most savings accounts.0
