You used to be able to use them at the Tesco pumps, until Tesco realized they could lose money by doing it, and so basically switched off that option for all authorization cards.
If you want an example of them processing differently, though: RyanAir.What would William Shatner do?0 -

Yea, it was tesco that stopped - I knew that cos they only take a shadow debit of £1. I always fill up the day before payday knowing it will go through (my o/d would cover it anyway) but prior to getting full account my electron card used to let me fill up to £59 or something even though balance was say £2.....
tesco must have been scammed, £59 x 1000's of people soon add's up I guess.

On a separate issue, I applied for barclays bank account over a month ago and still heard nothing! can't appeal with no reference or anything (done it online and got confirmation email)..... thought they would have decency to write to me and offer me a basic account.

you have to phone them - their 0500 number is free I think 0500 007 234
Originally they told me I needed to take ID in which I did - the guy photocopied it and said the debit card would be sent out - it didn't arrive
so I phoned again and they said it had gone to local decision - so went to branch again and the manager wanted to approve it but the computer wouldn't let her as I had done the application online - they tried phoning the helpdesk but the person on the other end kept thinking it was an online banking query....that didn't get anywhere - they didn't want to credit score me again so they offered me a cash card account which they opened there and then0 -

so, because I have a mainstream HSBC Plus account with debit card and a second account with them, plus 3 credit cards (BOI gold & Citigold and vanquis) do you think if I went into branch in a couple of months with ID they may give me an account there and then, assuming the manager could override a bad decision? what do you think? or barclays manager would be good for this....

never-in-doubt wrote: »Nope, not entirely true back at ya lol..... you can't use them at Tesco pay at pump - it comes up as payment not accepted i.e electron. Same goes with planes and trains. They are all authorisation cards, same as solo/electron but go through as Visa (they also report to cra's as a bank account which looks good)
o would I be right in thinking then that visa debit is no different to electron as like electron need live terminal to authorise. If so then what's the point of me switching from co-op electron to Barclays visa debit.
Thanks all.0 -
Never-in-doubt, have you ever tried to buy a ticket on a train and been declined with a Visa Debit card that requires authorisation. As I said previously on a train it wont happen the technology is not up to it, I bought a £64 ticket with a Cashplus prepaid card with no money on it, as I also previously said if you run an electron card through a ticket issuing machine on a train it reads the number as Visa and issues a ticket, it is simply the staff that are told not to accept them on trains.
You did not reply the last time I mentioned this and I hope you do this time.0 -
I have a 2in1 Visa debit card from the Halifax and every transaction is authorised. I have no problem using Tesco Pay@PumpBarclaysManager wrote: »You used to be able to use them at the Tesco pumps, until Tesco realized they could lose money by doing it, and so basically switched off that option for all authorization cards.

never-in-doubt wrote: »dont forget HSBC as they no longer use Solo.... :T so you'll get a nice silver visa "all authorisation" debit card! Its based around electron/solo meaning you cannot use it unless the terminal is live, i.e. needs authorisation. So you cannot use it on a plane, train or petrol pay at pumps to name a few..... also, cashback is not offered at all places, the tills must know that it is an electron card substitute or summat - I think supermarkets offer c/b but my local spar never (I do have the HSBC Plus Maestro which isn't all auth as well as this account).
Indeed. However, I was refering to basic bank accounts, and not current accounts. HSBC basic bank accounts offer a cash card only.o would I be right in thinking then that visa debit is no different to electron as like electron need live terminal to authorise. I would still apply for the Barclays Cash Card Account (CCA) though. It will be accepted at more places, where your Co-op Electron card won't, due to no Electron sign displayed in shops or online. When Electron is not accepted, your Barclays CCA VISA debit card would be useful.
If you use Tesco petrol station, just use cash. Alternatively, go to another one.

Rather than it being a bad decision - it was a technical problem with the computer system which wouldn't allow the manager to edit the status of the applicationnever-in-doubt wrote: »so, because I have a mainstream HSBC Plus account with debit card and a second account with them, plus 3 credit cards (BOI gold & Citigold and vanquis) do you think if I went into branch in a couple of months with ID they may give me an account there and then, assuming the manager could override a bad decision? what do you think? or barclays manager would be good for this....
You are best phoning them up and asking what the issue is they will probably just want ID - though if you do take that make sure they give you your sort code and account number there and then so you know it is definately open0
