i feel the bank should be giving you back the money straight awa

But if they did that *everyone* would pretend to have not had their money from the machine...

  • No, no reciept came out - the money shutter wouldnt open, he said he tried to push it open incase it was just caught on something but then the error came up and the receipt didnt come out. I am surprised that even though i phoned the owner of the the atm aswell (abbey) they didnt even consider checking the details of the machine and see the error. I would be very surprised if they are unable to do so as i worked for a very well known company and we operated the payment machines from the comfort of a call centre. We couldnt amend transaction details but we could see full transaction history, all error messages and any faults apparent and send engineers - process new tickets.

Why? It's the guy i have know and has been my best mate/boyf since i was about 13. Not someone i have only been with 6 months or so. This is the guy that knows my life history, my every flaw, my blood type, my family health history. [...] Am i the only one that thinks its ok for your life partner, if you like, knows your pin? Lol, makes me think it's weird that someone could know everything about you, but no not your pin. To us its not that big a deal - its not like i would be stupid to give it to anyone else - or write it in my purse/diary/phone like i know many do!

I think you've taken offence at my words because you've misunderstood my point. Of course I trust my OH too, but I wouldn't tell him the pin number for any of my personal accounts. Not because I don't trust him, but because I wouldn't tell anyone. Why? Not because I'm a heartless cow, but because I don't want my bank to catch me out, accuse me of being reckless with my security and not fight my corner in the future if I'm a victim of fraud and need them.

Regardless of your relationship with your OH, if your account is an individual account, you shouldn't be sharing your pin number. I was a victim of fraud recently - someone tried to do me for £250. I found the experience highly upsetting, but it would have been worse if my bank hadn't been behind me from day one. If I'd told them I'd given my OH my pin number, then they would have been much less helpful.

Do you understand what I mean now? I'm not doubting your relationship with your OH, but your bank may see you sharing your pin number as a sign that you're lax about security and any fraud on your account is your problem, not theirs. If someone clones your card and takes lots of money out, they might try and blame it on your OH. After all, if banks were reasonable, do you think they would levy such high bank charges?
  • I did take offense, i am sorry!!!:o

it's just one of those things i suppose. TBH i don't know why i still use some of the cash machines these days, namely abbey as they are the bank that where a big factor in spiralling into debt, long before any security issues could ever have surfaced. They used to regularly mess up, and then not give a damn even though the proof was all there that it was them at fault. Never mind!

And i am just so furious that my money now may be theirs for keeps...i have been reading an incident on another forum and the responses there are pretty dire which has made me feel worse. And i hadn't even thought of the fact he did the transaction till someone here mentioned it. :(

it must be a struggle especially with a little one to feed. maybe explain to the nursery about whats happened and hopefully they will give you a bit mpre time to pay.

i also let my oh use my card, he knows my pin, takes cash out at atms and even uses it out shopping without me being there (live in the middle of nowhere so he often shops etc on way home), never really thought about it security wise.

anyway really hope they sort it soon x

  • I also let my OH use my card, it is a joint account but the card only has my name on it.

We used to have a card each when they were electron cards, but when the card was upgraded to a debit card we were told it was only one card per account, so he now does not have one.

I have had this bank account for 22 years and it has been a joint account for 12 years.

I personally think most couples do this.
  • Yeah, i have never seen it as a great deal either.

i have just been in the middle of a game of pass the blame. Halifax are telling me they can fill out claim forms but do no more as it's not their cash machine (fair enough i would have thought) and they will clear the first of my charges if any occur. Abbey (via the fraud number on the machine itself) are refusing to even help - telling me to just speak to Halifax, saying the will not under any circumstance foot any charges for the inconvenience, they say even though their cash machine was faulty it's still the fault of Halifax (!!!!!! - excuse my french but how on earth does that make sense? they just admitted that THEIR OWN cash machine was at fault). I assume it is going to be a very long process.

My advice to people now is instead of taking out bulk amounts of cash in one go when you are down to your last amount, maybe split it between 2 or 3 withdrawals. That was you don't lose everything.

I now officially despise Abbey - i didn't like them befors but now i can't stand them.

Hi just reading your thread and wondered if it was a scam I have heard about. Fraudsters use a thin piece of wire to effectively block the machine, hence you use your card yet nothing comes out. Once you have left they come back and remove the wire.....and your cash!

So the machine was definitely faulty? if money goes back into the machine, it is usually recognised and then refunded to the account.

What did Halifax say on time scales, I'd be livid by now, that they have admitted it wasn't your error but haven't given you the money back yet (be it temporarily or permenantly whilst they investigate).

If we're thinking of the same thing, that's the "Lebanese loop" - it's the card they trap, not the cash. ;)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
