Did you sign up for a BT contract last April?

My "contract" runs out in 7-days time, so as per BT's letter from a year ago and as per the website, I have just telephoned to ensure it doesnt automatically renew. Guess what - unless I ring EXACTLY on the day its due to expire they say I'll be charged an early termination fee (!!), and just as I started to object the line went dead!

Same happened to me, I'm to ring back on April 17th! In addition BT haven't contacted me yet to remind me that it will automatically renew soon if I don't cancel it - when did everyone elses letters start to come through?

Had the automatically renew letter on 11th March, contract originally started on 25th March. However last bill received 12th does not include the credits ( as if no longer on the plan 'free if on 12 mth contract').

We have been on the 12-month 'Free Evenings & Weekends' rolling contract offer since 14th April last year.

Firstly, BT haven't written or emailed us to advise that the contract is reaching it's renewal point - not that we were likely to opt-out at this time, but it does suggest to me that BT aren't doing what they promised to do when we originally signed up. This is quite underhand, and if widespread will force many customers onto another 12-month contract if they happen to be a bit too busy to keep track of dates, or were too trusting of BT when they read they would be getting a renewal notice.

My question however realates to the 'new' Friends and Family Mobile package which has replaced the old Friends & Family deal.

According to the BT website I have to login to my account to choose which of the two deals I want. As I am on the 12-month rolling contract, the Mobile F&F package *should* be inclusive.

However, when I try to change my package I get the message - 'Sorry, there is an order in progress on your account'. I therefore cannot choose to go on to the package. At present therefore we have no F&F on the account at all.

Is the 'order in progress' actually the renewal of the 12-month contract? Will we be able to sign up to the F&F Mobile deal after 14th April when the contract has renewed?

P.S. I am now in two minds whether or not to cancel the contract renewal before 14th April, as it sounds as if my Broadband supplier, O2, is about to launch a home phone product. If we get locked in to another BT contract, we'll have to wait another 12-months before we could take it up.....
  • BT didn't get in touch with us and our contract would have automactically renewed on 17th April.

I think it is quite underhand too as if it wasn't for this site I would have never have thought to double check when the contract was to be renewed. I cancelled the automatic renewal tonight even though when I last rang I was told I had to ring on the 17th! Our sky TV and broadband are up for renewal soon so once they are up we'll shop around.

Rolling contracts shouldn't be allowed by the regulator IMO.

    Dear BT Support

I have already logged the details with BT as detailed on post 11 of this thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1359885. I will await the outcome - did not receive new bill ( I don't think your system works like that) so will await next quarter bill.

It would be helpful however to all here if you could clarify how the renewals and credits of these contracts are supposed to work and how they are actually working in practice.

Anne - I have emailed you as requested in your PM.
  • How very peculiar, following from my phone call to cancel the rolling contract I received a letter

"Thank you for choosing our friends and family mobile deal" ............... When you took the unlimited evening and weekend plan deal you agreed to a 12 month renewable contract, which ends on 17th April 2009, we have simply added friends and family mobile to this contract term". It also mentions that as they have started to provide the service as agreed I cannot cancel this service without incurring termination charges.

The letter was dated 15th April and I got it today (18th) so the day after my renewal date

Also the line we now know "if you do not wish to renew your 12 month contract you must let us know before the renewal date"

So technically today I've started another rolling 12 month contract, with an additional service I didn't request.

I've telephoned BT today and spoke to 2 lovely members of staff Melissa and Colin who were very helpful and sorted out what I wanted and ordered caller display while I was there. Importantly there's NO record of me ordering friends and family mobile deal, in addition my rolling contract wasn't cancelled as I requested.

So make sure your letter confirms what you ordered!!

and ordered caller display while I was there

I trust they offered you the free/virtually free BT Privacy at home option and not the £30 a year bundle.
