Free £20! Urgent, just open a savings account

Exactly, there is no mistake on ING's part! They wouldn't have made the offer if they didn't want people to take it up. They want people to open accounts. It was always described as being available for a limited time only, all Martin has done has meant they close the offer earlier because they've met their quota.
Sure, some people will open the account, wait for the £20 to arrive and then close it but I suspect a lot won't, they'll give it a try and see what they think. ING would be well aware when making this offer that some people will choose not to stay with them. It's just like Experian, they give incentives for customers to sign up through free trials and the like and just hope enough people decide to stay on and pay for the service or just forget to cancel the payment.0 -

Clearly, somebody at ING made an error and, thanks in part to MSE, it has cost them dearly - or rather, it will cost their real customers dearly.
There's a line that needs to be drawn between 'consumer greed' and 'consumer revenge' IMHO. The banks are in real trouble at the moment and kicking them while they are down is out of order - again, IMHO.
GG
AFAIK, there was no error, simply a company offering an incentive to open an account. Just a method of advertising. The t&cs said they could close offer at any time, and they did, don't see the problem myself0 -

I guess I'm skinter than you then !!!!0 -
I refer upermankelly to my post on page 6.
ING have provided our family with a free £155. Well worth getting out of bed for, posting on this web site for, AS WELL AS supermans Isas and 2 for 1s!
Please keep up superman!!0 -
Even if it was a mistake and everyone who received Martin's money saving email applied - what it will cost ING is but a drop in the financial ocean. I applied for it along with my husband and two sons - I'm not going to withdraw it immediately upon receipt and am hopefully going to use it to save up for a 'rainy' day. The people who do withdraw it will doubtless spend it, so hopefully it will do its bit for the economy.

I got one just in time this morning after reading Martin's newsletter. Thank you!0

If you quoted in context, however, you'd have seen that horseykitty saidEven if it was a mistake and everyone who received Martin's money saving email applied
S/he didn't say everyone did apply, but was just taking a worst case senario.0 -

Most people posting on here were verified electronically, so didn't need to supply verification., getting an envelope and stamp
It was a freepost address.and sending off a cheque for £1!
Yes, it takes me ages to write a cheque too. Then have to follow withdrawl process which by the way won't be that easy with a savings (dont expect a debit card in the post), then have to cancel the account. Enjoy all the time on the phone to call centre hoping they have a free call line.
Yes, they do have a free call line. It's 0800 376 8877 (Mon-Fri 7am-11pm, otherwise 9am-9pm). You are right that there won't be a debit card in the post, more likely a cheque for the closing balance or a BACS/FP transfer to the linked current account. Then you get to open junk mail every month from them for the 7 years companies keep customer data in there database, or until you move.
So when you ring the freephone number to close the account, make sure you're taken off all marketing lists. Then they are not allowed to send things out to you, so that's ok.or you can just say nah forget it, and have a cup of tea and do something you enjoy,
Things I enjoy often cost me a little bit of money. It would be nice to have £20 towards that.forgetting about the £20 that you thought you scammed a bank for, who actuallt the one running to the bank laughing (just to end with a punn;)
Scammed the bank for? They chose to offer it, it's all above board.0 -
supermankelly, you fail at trolling.0
