  • One person who will probably not be too concerned about the gas price rise is Sir Roy Gardner, the Chief Executive of Centrica PLC, the company that owns British Gas.

His total emoluments from Centrica plc:

    2004: £1,623,000
    2003: £1,480,000

That's not including share options, long-term incentive scheme and pension by the way.

His accrued pension as at 31 December 2004: £335,800

(i.e. the amount that would be paid annually on retirement at age 62)

Oh... and he got another £100,000 as chairman of Manchester United plc in 2004.

All the above figures are taken from Centrica plc's 2004 accounts -- the 2005 ones won't be out for a while.

    Hot off the press:

British Gas will be launching a new Price Protection 2009 offer which will allow customers to fix their prices for three winters.

I have no details on this at this time.

Gas goes up about 3% electricity comes down about 3% These rises are on top of the 22% rise just announced.

Just as well the internet hasn't gone up 22% - poor people wouldn't be able to afford this essential service.

There are literally billions of chinese out there who would love a car on their driveway and a fidge freezer etc.
With globalisation there are billions of Indian and Chinese people who will move towards a western lifestyle and there is no way that this isn't going to affect fossil fuel prices over here.

Good point. And imagine what will happen to the price of consumerables when the chinese have the means to buy their own goods...

In a few years' time you'll be lucky to buy a DVD player for £199, let alone 19quid.

Let's just wake up to the fact that we've had it good for the last 10 years, but the next ten are going to be flippin expensive.
  • I managed to get onto the BG offer a few days before it closed. I did a ring around to my Mother and Mother-in-Law and got them to do the same!! at least it will keep the dogs at bay for a little longer :(

my gas has gone up from £39 to £60 a month in the last year and a half.
what happens when the water shortages kick in as well.
we as a society have got used to luxurys, years ago it was rent and food if your lucky.
now we want warm homes, dad said they used to wake up with frost on the windows.
all these electric gadgets we have to have are consuming more energy of which there isnt much left.

Umm cutting consumption is fine, I have no problem with that. What I do have a problem with is that increases are hurting the poor and vulnerable disproportionate in comparison to those well off much like council tax is now.

When your on a low income, it hurts you more and there is little to cut down on already. Its particularly more acute on those on low incomes who need old or have a medical condition or disability, as they may be more prone to the cold.

We all have to consume less, but we need alternatives. The problem is that alternatives at present cost more, sure they may lesson as fossil fuels rise, but in order to use more environmental friendly alternatives money needs to be invested, the problem is that unless government helps those who cant pay for the alternatives ie mini turbines, solar panel etc they will get penalised in the poverty trap. Building wind fames, and fields of solar panels will not unfortunately provide us will all our needs. Far better solution is local incentives.

I am a strong believer in using alternatives locally and have system in place that sure in real time consumption, but in the mean time increases are getting out of control and those like the poor will suffer the most.

The Chinese are consuming fossil fuels at an alarming rate, that's fine they want to grow and increase there living standards, however we shouldn't be critically of them as we should be showing them by example.

I still argue that whilst increases are inevitable there are many people out there that need help, they need warmth and not yet another cut in there living standards.
  • The bloody idiots that they are. I was on the phone to some boring git trying to work me out a DD monthly price and he assured me that the price wasn't coming - it was just an article that someone had printed due to the import cost of gas. Lying ba****ds! The most annoying thing is that my current bill of £192 would have been closer to £230 for 3 months worth of gas.

the gas and electric rises worry me for more than 1 reason. ok so as i sit here freezing my (albeit ample) !!!!!! off, i have noticed a lot of everyday items have increased in price lately, could these increases be caused by the increase in energy costs to manufaturers?

ah well how many weeks till it gets warmer? then there will be no water.............................................
trying hard to count my blessings while surrounded by idiots :O)
  • We live in a capiltalistic society and we cosume as much as we possibly can in the shortest period of time.

Also, these big banks, utilities etc are out for profit and are driven by the sharholders, i.e the public.

House prices have caused a massive amount of artificial inflation....its seems the chickens are coming home to roost.

BG putting up prices by 22% , there is no surprise.

Its our own greed that has led us to this.
