Please reread my post, that's not what I wrote. I said "If [there is a £3000 difference]". It is a conditional sentence, not a claim that the hypothesis holds.

If it makes you happier you can pretend that the hypothetical situation postulated was a £100 difference not a £3000 difference, but it makes no difference at all to the argument advanced.

If it has no relevance then whats the point of saying it.

The factory where I work due to a loss of orders have had to make redundancies and we have all taken a pay cut. Its time the car manufacturers started taking the same approach rather than asking the government for bail outs.

If the government helps out Vauxhall then why shouldnt they help house builders and every other British company thats provided jobs over the last few decades and have fallen on hard times?

The workforce were employed to meet demand of orders, if those orders dont exist in the same volume then the workforce needs to be cut down or wages need to be cut in order to make the books balance!

Have a look on the internet outside this site.Vauxhall workers have already taken a pay cut.

As do many mass produced goods, despite (including cars) falling in relative price.

Equally however people can barely top their own oil up these days, never mind maintain a car. People do however like to drive new cars, and will continue to have that want - now they may have to save a little more to afford it than in the past.

The idea though that the car industry was wholly supported by people MEWing is simply laughable.

I dont think i did say that , credit is the lifeblood of the car industry , both to make and to sell. But the overuse of credit has became the problem , at the consumer end , and it drying up at the business end.

Your right cars have like most historically extinct animals became over specialised , having been a mechanic in my ealier days you cant do anything to them but glue on a bodykit these days , unless you have a computer degree and specialised jiggery and tooling. They are too technological for anyone to "tinker" with.

Perhaps vauxhall should die a death , and then be reborn. If only we bought british in the first place , or had like the french do the government staked heavilly into it.The french and german buy their own cars for the most part , and our snobs buy theirs too instead of jag/rover.

One of the posters is right though if we british make righties , and the global market is lefties , then our exports are limited to the colonies whom already have cheaper options in the case of australia from japan and korea. And in the case of the rest of the former colonies just too poor to need a car anyway. But the way modern engineering is done then a new dash and steering mounting changes are relatively easy for the manufacturer.

People are snobs , they want rather than need new cars.If it was a matter of no credit no car , then rather than walk or use public transport , they will save for the cheapest option instead. It becomes a status symbol to have the best car on the street....even if its the only one.

In my life I have only bought one new car so far , and sold that at over 50 percent of what I paid for it 4 years later. It was a suzuki , the basis of them was cheap and to do the job at hand , and it has worked sucessfully for decades.Thier end of the market is starting to be encroached by the koreans and their 7 year warranty.A warranty that means trouble free motoring , but sure no new car to pose on the driveway for a long time.

Beware the return of the lada , if it wasnt for the emmissions problem from the old tech in those cars they would still be the cheapest option on the road in the uk.Its going to be a dark time for car lovers over the next decade , its back to vanilla , the vavavoom will have to gogogo.Makers will ride a model til it dies old old age.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

pretty much all of the car companies have closed their factories for extended periods and cut workers' pay as a result. many have made significant redundancies as well.

    not that i agree with a bail-out.

The thing with vauxhalls is that they are now starting pre-production runs on the new astra at ellesmere port and the car is reckoned to become one of the top sellers in europe...tony wooodly of the unite union spent 20 years at ellesmere port plant and i think they will get the money off the goverment......
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

    Some more info.
GM Europe will run out of cash 'within weeks'

    Christine Buckley, Industrial Editor

General Motors’ European operations will run out of cash within weeks unless they get government support, the US carmaker warned today, saying that a collapse would put up to 300,000 jobs at risk.
Fritz Henderson, the chief operating officer, said that the division, which includes Germany’s Opel and Britain’s Vauxhall, will hit liquidity problems early in the second quarter.
