our test drive went well last weekend , had a phone call 24 hours before to arrange delivery and take card details , they took an £80 deposit for fuel.

car was delivered at 11am friday morning - they just dropped it off and popped the keys through the door as we werent; expecting it until 2pm and collected it about 12 monday. the deposit was back in the bank within 48 hours of collection.

have to say we wern't impressed with the car but it got us to stafford and back and it was free .

  • Had my 'test drive' on 22nd April, they rang first to confirm it all, took my cc details then delivered 3pm next day, collected 3pm day after, no problems, just re fuelled, no charge to my card at all.
Great car, much cheaper on petrol than mine, did over 100 miles, cost 7 quid to refuel!

Personally I wouldn't do this unless I was planning to hire a car anyway and not just to take advnatage of the offer.
There are many problems that can occur with car hire e.g.

    1) Them claiming you have done damage like scratches which is hard to dispute unless you've phtographed the whole car beforehand. They could do this cynically just to get you to pay the excess.
    2) High excesses or have to pay for excess waivers.
    3) Additional fees for extra drivers, environmental charges (all plus VAT).
    4) Disputes about the state of the exterior, interior and level of fuel, which are very hard to prove.

I'm not saying all car hire firms are crooks as obviously there are good and bad.
But it seems to be fraught with problems, so it's not something I'd do jsut to save using my own car or just to take advanatge of the offer.
Of course if you were planning on hiring a car anyway then it saves money.

If you want to be ultra cautious, then check all bills and terms and conditions carefully, check the car for damage thoroughly before and make sure it's noted on teh diagram and photograph the car all round before you give it back.
Might sound like paranoia but could save a load of grief.
I agree with you that checking the car thoroughly, & taking pictures, when you first get it & just before dropping it off are an absolute must, as is checking the T&Cs, but IMHO you're overstating the downsides of this deal a bit.
Don't get me wrong there are some very dodgey people out there and one has to be careful, but as long as you are careful I don't see any reason not to have a bit of fun with offers like this *shrug* :)
  • i had ordered a car for tomorrow fopr my daughters birthday was gonna tke her away for the weekend.......

They have cancelled all bookings after June....mine was 3 July!
Unfortunately, we are unable to continue the programme beyond the end of June 2009. As you currently have a reservation date beyond the end of June, we apologise in advance for not being able to provide you with a free 24 hour Test Drive on your preferred date. We wish it were otherwise, but really have no alternative in the current economic climate.
