Why are some freecyclers so rude??

I don't honestly know - I had to ban somone from my group yestrday for being abusive to a member who did not gift their offered item to them. I Guess in this world of instant gratification many people "want it now" and are not prepared to accept a -ve out come.

Greed is at the hear of it I guess - the same banned member has had a series of wanted posts for what I would consider as luxury items and we had one person posting a wanted, then a recieved and then a 2nd wanted for the same item (Clavinova Piano) so we had to assume that they may have been profiteering.

People are also known to have sold a link to Freecycle.org on eBay - but that was stamped out quickly.

    Hey ho!

BTW - Don't let Deron Beal (Freecycle Founder) hear you say Freecyclers - the Trade Mark Team will be after you!! ;)

Hoopylass, my point being that they should not try to enforce things that none of the other freecycle groups do. Imagine being on a v.low income who is trying to make ends meet. You see something in your local freecycle & are told that in order to join you must give something, how? when you can barely make ends meet?

I totally disagree with you there. For freecycle to work, people have to offer things - if no-one "offers" anything and everyone "wants", it won't function! EVERYONE has something they don't want, even if they have no money. We have had some topsoil out of someone's garden, someone else offered empty shoe boxes and pink CD cases. All these things were claimed by someone who wanted them. Someone here rightly said, one person's junk is another person's treasure, but if you want the group to work, you need to contribute to it.

Am desperately trying to get rid of a sofabed and decided to try freecycle having seen this thread.

I've listed it on 2 occasions and each time have had a flurry of interest and somebody (2 different people) said they wanted it. As soon as I got to the point of trying to arrange a time for them to pickup, I never heard from either one of them again!

    Is this the norm?

Also, any tips on how often to relist? My area's freecycle has 1000 members and new messages are posted frequently so your ad disappears off the first page pretty quickly.

Amazed how hard it is proving to give something away!!!

Hi Unfortunately this is tending to happen and it seriously pi***s me and other members off - it is however something we have to put up with.

What area are you in? Have you tried posting the sofa-bed to other adjacent groups? I know that cross posting is frowned upon but if you post local and then if it ain't gone in a week or two post to adjacent groups that, to my mind, is not cross posting.

Usually moderators like to see 2 weeks between posts - check with your list owner - also let them know that members have let you down - it may be that the same members are saying I WANT IT to ALL offers and then letting lots of members down - the mod can deal with them if you tell them.

Have you a Local Exchange Trading System LETS in your area - see https://www.lets-linkup.com for LETS in the UK - you might be able to get rid of it AND earn a few LETS!

    Cheers

There is normally a delay before your message will be posted and sent to other freecyclers, we have a delay sometimes of several hours between posting a message and then for it to be displayed, the other posts you have seen may have been posted several minutes ago.
