  • Hi

quality tuna reduced from £1 to 50p say, ?

As opposed to non-quality Tuna? Are they selling better fish in John West tins? Diferent fisherman capturing the quality fish that are somwhow better than other fish in different tins?

at the moment though im in the process of shopping around different supermarkets and finding local farm shops (which, tbh, so far ive been disappointed with)

whereabouts are you, as perhaps someone local to you on here, can recommend which farm shops to go to. You tend to find the best ones are a well kept secret, and only get trade by word of mouth

in fact I was annoyed at the price of coconut milk - it was 1.39 compared to 99p in Asda

actually its about 50p a tin in Tesco, but you need to look in the aisle that has ingredients from different countries, rather than on the standard tinned food aisle

for some reason, tesco think that they can charge two different prices for similar products depending on which aisle to pick it up from. If you want rice, pasta, olive oil, poppadums, and naan, etc. its also cheaper in the 'foreign foods' aisle

anyone else like the new feature on mysupermarket.com, where you can split your basket over 2 shops, therefore taking advantage of the best offers from each.

As im near 3 supermarkets, this has really cut down the cost of my shopping

In a word yes! Farmed fish vs wild fish, free range vs battery, organic vs non organic

Price differences are not just due to fancy packaging.

I've got Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Lidl, Aldi, Iceland and M&S all within reasonable distance of here. The only ones I hardly go to are Aldi (prefer Lidl) and Asda. I loathe Asda with a passion...the store smells faintly rancid and the meat and veg are really poor quality. The only times I ever go there is when they have a particularly good deal on something I want, like cat food or the brand of beer my Hubby likes. I have in past times had to combine these trips with doing a weekly shop but it's so hard to wade through all the junk and synthetic muck to get to a few decent foodstuffs that I usually give up, and the offers are mostly on the junk. Cheap? Who cares? I'd rather go somewhere that I can eat the stuff even if it does cost a couple of pennies more.

Yup, it's just such a sleezeball tactic, isn't it? I do laugh when folk complain about the "aisles of foreign food in my British supermarket", lol. Go and have a look at it instead!

I love the "foreign" food isles in my local Tesco, some fab stuff in there :) I tend to buy my dried beans and spices from these isles, plus anything else that takes my fancy :D

As far as supermarkets are concerned, living near a city I am lucky to have a pretty good selection, including Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, Co-Op, Iceland and Aldi (no Lidl though)

I use Sainsburys for my main monthly shop, then top up at Tesco or Morrisons. We do have a couple of so-called farm shops near us, but at both nearly all the fruit and veg is imported from other countries, one only sells frozen meat (none of which is local, so food miles there...), and the other one does sell fresh meat, but again not local. Which for me kind of is the ethos of farm shops surely? Selling fresh local food?

I do use Asda for specific purposes - I am usually put in charge of doing the catering for departmental do's at work, and usually use Asda for things like onion bhajis, samosas etc for those. I also like Asda's own ricecrackers and some other bits, so as Asda is only 1/2 mile from Sainsburys, I tend to pop in once a month and get the bits I like. I have bought Asda's fruit and veg before, but found the stuff from my local store (Cambridge) didn't keep very long. But bizzarely, I've bought similar stuff in the Asda stores in Bodmin and St Austell, and the stuff has kept well

It's a pity we can't get the same products in English stores that our neighbours North of the Border can get, but if you want Polish stuff that's no problem. Don't get me wrong, keep the "foreign" stuff but why 5 or 6 types of mayonnaise, ketchup and the like?
