All depends what you buy and where

I shop around, if shopping online I do it via mysupermarket, I buy what is on offer and what is cheaper in each shop. If say pasta is cheaper in one shop (just as an example, not bought any for about a year as stockpiled :o ) that's where I buy a lot from, same applies for rice if that means going elsewhere etc.
One day I might be more organised...........

have to say I don't shop at Asda as for years now there isnt one remotely near where i live but when I lived in Blackburn there was one which my parents went to. I found the food very poor quality and choice limited. On one occasion I couldnt buy Kelloggs cereals - they only sold Asdas own.

do find them good for non foods tho

They may be meaning it's cheaper than anywhere else they can shop at. Very few people can actually shop at all the big supermarkets.

Or maybe they are just going by what the adverts tell them. On Watchdog the other day the supermarket voted the best for quality was voted for by people who had never shopped there.

was that Waitrose? I have only been there a few times but have to say it is top quality and not necessarily dearer. I found some mincemeat there cheaper than the stuff I had just bought in Tescos.

It all depends on the individual shopper!

I can chose between asda and tesco without going much out of my way. I buy a few things at tesco every month, but my day to day groceries (including fruit and veg, bread, milk) I buy at Asda. Whenever I go to tesco -and i have the choice of two - they are out of stock of basic things like any type of wholemal bread, or carrots, or mushrooms, or even milk!

I got a load of reduced going out of date today items today in asda - I got 10 meals worth of meat reduced down to less than £2 - bargain!

Their customer service is awful though!

  • interesting comments. I had been to Asda once before and came out disappointed and I was thinking to myself as i went round the other day "why the hell are you back here" - the same reasons were going through my head as to why i didn't like it. Limited choice, unusual layout etc. Limited choice being the main one now i think about it

Oh well i know for the future to stick with what you know, I think part of it is familiarity - I know where the reduced section is in sainsburys and what time of day to go to get reduced deli items etc, where as with a new supermarket you're completely lost and end up spending more as a result. I think familiarity helps you spend less - you know what represents good value in the usual shop - If something has come down in price you can usually spot it.

I see lots of judgemental people when I walk round Asda :-)

Yes, I believe it was. They had several categories and the winners in each got more votes than people that had said they shopped in that supermarket. So obviously some people were voting on reputation not experience.

I think it depends on what you buy and your local store - I've checked on mysupermarket and the basics I get every week are cheaper in asda. By this i mean raw ingredients - oats, flour, butter, milk, tinned toms, lentils, nuts, dreid fruit, cheese etc plus household cleaning stuff. I don't buy anything processed so can't comment on the quality of that. Meat comes from the butcher and veg from the market.

The customer service is fantasic and fab whoopsie reductions too.

I do wonder if portion sizes are taken into account when peeps say Asda is cheaper. I've been a few times lately and, though individual items are sometimes cheap - the portions are tiny! What good is that? Half a mouthful of pate at 30p isn't going to do any good at the rate my OH eats it.

I don't think Asda buyers could recognise - let alone price - quality fresh produce. Their specialist area is additive-laden processed food. Anything blue and fizzy is their forte.

What exactly is the need for a comment like that?? What has that contributed to this thread other than an outright attack on people who shop at asda? I dont see the need to comment if there is nothing useful to contribute.

Like others I shop between a variety of supermarkets, depending on where I am and when I am going. Next to work I have a Tesco Extra, Sainsbury, M&S food hall. At home there is all of those plus Asda, Aldi/Lidl.

Asda is good for "store cupboard essentials" so to speak and branded products are a lot cheaper I have found, on the products that I buy. Their toiletries, cleaning products etc I often find to be the cheapest of the supermarkets, but have since learned of other places to shop for those from this site! I dont rate Asda fruit and veg at all and only buy it if i intend to use it that day or the day after. Ive found that if I go into M&S after work, their reduced Fruit&Veg for that day is still miles better quality than what you would find full price in Asda, or even Tesco.

Im not a fan of Asda meats either, but then I dont like sainsburys meat either. Ive often found it to be pretty poor and rarely lasts longer than a day.

I have found however that Asda's Bakery can be fab and the wholemeal bread from there is the only one my son will eat - that and M&S!

Im off today to investigate Lidl/Aldi, which i have never been to, A local butcher who has been recommended, and my local farm shop!! Then i will be able to make an informed choice about where i think is best value for money. So far, for stocking up my cupboard, I would still use asda.
