Im finding this thread interesting as i used to shop at both tesco (for big monthly shop) and morrisons for my weekly bits and bobs. at the moment though im in the process of shopping around different supermarkets and finding local farm shops (which, tbh, so far ive been disappointed with) looking for better quality food for a reasonable price.
A lot of people have mentioned shopping at lidl or aldi. I was on my way to try aldi last week when my sister told me about a programme she had watched on channel 4 (i think) about supermarkets and the quality of their food. She said the programme makers tested things like which supermarkets injected their chicken breasts and also tested fruit and veg to make sure they contained the right amounts of vitamins etc according to british food standards. Apparently it was found that aldi and lidl were the worst perfomers for quality in most areas they tested. Did anyone else watch this? Those that did, did it not put you off buying there? I didnt try aldi in the end, what my sister told me sounded horrible!0 -

Sounds like the one I watched, but your sister is slightly mixed up. They did show how water, and other things can be injected into chicken, but did not name supermarkets specifically.
They did test tomatoes for some vitamin or other, and found the ones in lidl had slightly less of it. It was not much and would not have made a difference at all. The "expert" they wheeled out to comment on this introduced him self with the word "I'm not an expert, but it could be......"
I'm pretty sure the programme was fronted by a little baldy chef with a funny name. I got the impression it was just a collection of little things that could happen, shown to persuade us to cook our own food more, and so buy more cook books written by baldy little chefs.
Maybe next time he can do a programme on famous chefs having to close their restaurants because they may have poisoned all their customers!0 -
Like others have said I think it is down to individual shoppers and what they buy.
I use my greengrocer for fruit and veg as supermarket quality isnt good.
I have a delivery of meat once a month from a local farmshop co operative.
I use Asda for storecupboard basics and find it cheaper than Tesco which I used previously.
I find all my shopping turns up from Asda but with Tesco lots were substituted with Finest products at twice the price:rolleyes:
I don`t go into an actual Asda shop so can`t really comment on that.0 -

I'm usually a Sainsbury's shopper as i think the prices are really quite good, but for a change i tried Asda. I thought it was actually quite expensive, and poor quality food.
You may say Sainsbury's is expensive, but they always have offers on which makes it cheap - quality tuna reduced from £1 to 50p say, walking around Asda I found very few offers other than fizzy drinks, 2 for £3 (expensive) or some cereals. There were the £1 offers but only on Asda brand goods which i've been eating for the last couple of days and i have to say are extremely bad quality compared to even sainsbury's basics. There was also very little choice despite the shop being twice the size of Sainsburys in my area.
Yet people i know swear it's cheaper than anywhere else? Anybody else find Asda a strange phenomenon?
What I like about Sainsbury's is the quality of everything plus their offers are very good.
My Mum (81) is only on a state pension and shops at Waitrose every week as she find the quality good, offers excellent and that is no higher in price than anywhere else she could shop.Christians Against Poverty - www.capuk.org0 -

Incidentally, I use mysupermarket.co.uk, and compare the prices with Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Ocado. Everytime, Ocado come back as the cheapest, their quality is brilliant, and their delivery service excellent. Might be worth a look?

EVERY time I look on my supermarket.co.uk Ocado and Waitrose come out at TWICE the price:eek:
but despite having a WAL MART mega store on my doorstep I STILL go to Tesco...:rotfl:just in case you need to know:

I'd often heard that Waitrose is no more expensive for basics like pasta, rice, bread etc and the quality is as you'd expect with its reputation (their bacon, lettuce, tomato sandwich is amazing) I might give it a try and see.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Fannyadams,
It was the everyday things - youghurts, cereals, milk (organic), tea, butter, sugar, some veg, fruit. There were a lot of offers which I took advantage of, such as washing powder £1 for 2Kg, but surely that's the point.
I make everything from scratch, so no ready-made meals etc.
It might just be a fluke this week, but I often shop in Waitrose (I know Ocado are seperate, but they mainly supply Waitrose goods), and the prices there are often comparable (sometimes cheaper) than places like Morrisons, Tesco etc.0 -
Different shopping patterns will bring different results, of course. But for the last 12-13 years IIRC Asda has been named Cheapest Supermarket by The Grocer magazine. That can't be a fluke...Call me Carmine....
