:rotfl: Can't say I'm surprised to hear that. The joys of working in a supermarket, eh?
Saying that though, my mum did find that, even using my staff discount, a lot of items did work out a bit cheaper in Asda. They often do good offers on wine - 3 bottles for £10, with some of the bottles costing £8 if bought alone. Just be careful and double check that the discount comes off at the till. We've been caught out a few times, either with the wrong wines being on the shelf or the system not liking the offer if we mixed and matched the wines (as far as I remember, you can have any 3 different wines across the offer range, but maybe an Asda worker could confirm or deny that?)£10 a day: March - August: £1653.54/£1840; September £92.86/£300NSD: April - August: 49 NSDs; September: 9/12101 in 1001 Project: 05/07/09 - 01/04/12 (8/101 completed)0 -
Went to Asda today to stock up on baby clothes (nappy cakes) and did the weekly shop while I was there.
As I wondered around I found that the portions where smaller than normal and as Im a WWer I tend to keep an eye on calories / sat fat content and found this quite a bit higher than Mr T. I also found in most ranges there was no 'healthy' option (you know like Mr T and Saunsburys do). But they did slightly re deem themselves in that their choice of WW branded food was a huge amount better than Mr T. I was able to get the cooking sauces and crisps AND doughballs which I cant get anywhere else
But the veg section dissapointed me as it all looked so small and well crappy. Lol. I picked up a few things but think ill have to go Mr T tomorrow to get the things I couldnt get!Green and White Barmy Army!0 -
Where i live we have Somerfield, Sainsburys, and Waitrose and i have a local style co-op near me (overpriced compared to bigger stores ).
Somefield seems to have dropped prices when i popped in last week i was quite pleasantly surprised. I bought 250grams baby sweetcorn £1.09 thats the cheapest i have seen in round here in months.
Sainsburys we go to most weeks (i shop with my mum she drives) i have noticed alot of price increases by 30p on alot of things. I can still budget but its harder and less choice than i would like.
i have to watch the fat content of things and its annoying that the nicer low fat stuff is more exspensive.
Waitrose i really like i pop in most days just to see if anything nice on offer is reduced and to get my daily paper. Currently they have most of the flash products half price which was nice as i needed some i think they sprays were about 74p. When a paper did a survey i thought they were unfair to waitrose. They mentioned the price for branded tin foil and own brand. Their own brand being higher than other stores but they did not mention that waitrose actually had a higher volume but a different brand for about a quid.
Beef Mince low fat lean i like making my own burgers etc.
somerfield fatty hard bits
sainsburys hit or miss with bits
waitrose best quality hands down would rather pay 50p more a pack and not have manky bits that put the kids of mince for life.
once a month we go 30 miles to aldi and morrisons.
morrisons just fill up on staples and good bogofs.
not keen on their mince .
aldi i do like the deli section of cold meats very tasty and intesteresting best prices from all the supermarkets. Cheese if very good value as well. Yogurts mmmmmmmmmmm.Love their own brand coffee much better than some branded names in mho. This is the one time of month i let the kids have some crisps and cheap biscuits. Its unbranded but the quality is better than supermarkets branded and some branded.0 -
I hate asda the quality is rubbish, I use to like it, I went back a few weeks ago, their towels are great though

I haven't had a problem with asda fruit and veg compared to other supermarkets or aldi, don't like their meat however.
Used to shop at tesco for clubcard points, now there are few good deals on these and they have seriously annoyed me in many ways (price, rubbish substitutions on home deliveries etc) I avoid them unless I have money off vouchers, which my local asda dont accept unless you buy the product.
When I go back to tescos I find there are now things I refuse to buy as they are so expensive. Asda are good for offers on eg washing powder, not interested in Junk food. Asda also good for clothes. Waitrose and M & S lovely quality ready meals and yoghurt, but too expensive for regular use.
M & S wine nasty - have now stopped buying meal deals as every wine I have tried is vinegary except a rose they only offered briefly.
Aldi veg not brilliant but often very cheap.
The upshot is that I go to Sainsburys or SOmerfield for meat (especially on offer) and shop for branded or own brand wherever is cheapest and most convenient.
I must say, I like sainsburys. I wish nectar points were more like clubcard points though.0 -
Watch out for the £1 large Galia melons
their all the "Bruised" ones! (ASDA)0 -
I use Asda occaisonally, as a change, they have nice fresh pizzas, their clothes section is handy for stocking up on undies for my DD, but for their food, I always find it's more expensive for what we buy.
There are some good deals to be had, but never on the goods we want. I don't mind shop own brands for a lot of thing, but insist on Kellog's cornflakes (no-one else makes them the same) and Warburton's bread.
I always end up shocked at the bill, even after I've taken away the little extras it still seems dearer than Tesco.
I use 'mysupermarket' too, and it agrees with me that I'm better off shopping at Tesco.:DMember of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

I think familiarity helps you spend less - you know what represents good value in the usual shop - If something has come down in price you can usually spot it.
That's fine if you have time to scan reduced aisles daily but you cannot do a "weekly shop" this way.
As for mysupermarket, that site would be better if it could include Morrisons, Somerfield, Lidl, Netto, Aldi and get a REAL price comparison. Just where are Ocado? I've never seen them. They don't trade in North East England or I suspect Scotland at all.:eek:0 -

Llidl - decent food at reasonable prices (although they're creeping up).
Tesco - too dear
Sainsbury - good but nearest store is 14 miles away.
Aldi - same as Sainsbury.
Netto - no stores in my region.
Asda - cheap for junk food, quality poorer than most.
Co-op - very expensive but reduced food is usually good quality.
My opinion - but it probably varies from place to place depending on how your local supermarkets are run.
I like you shop in a variety of shops, not all in the same week:eek: But I rotate & pick up bulk buys of varoius things at different shops.
My choice (& I'm lucky to have so many) in order of distance are
Waitrose - great for happy chicken breasts (individually wrapped for handy freezing & defrost just what you need). Own brand sliced ham, get the low fat/salt one, frequently on BOGOF, Regina loo roll, my fav - sometimes on BOGOF, baby bottom butter - great stuff;) BEST in store bakery of all the supermarkets. Best cooked chickens. Great offers & reductions when they do, much better than M&S.
Lidl - Don't really go in there, maybe once a year, nothing floats my boat.
Tesco - good all rounder, like their finest roast beef (but not as much as sainsburys TTD)
M&S - love the dine in for £10 deals, fill my freezer with their lean mince & organic chippolata sausages. Love their ready preped salad bowls & happy chickens.
Asda - I like Asda, I like their ready preped fresh fruit salads, their little bags of fresh chillis, their pointed sweet red peppers, their ready preped ranch salad, their romaine lettuce,
Sainsburys - the only own-brand stuff from the big four I would buy. Love their taste the difference roast beef, best quality of the big four, cheaper than M&S or Waitrose. Best cooked chickens of the big four.
Morrisons - Mear my work, best instore bakery of the big four, far better than the other three. Best salad bar of any reasonable drive (10 miles) supermarket near me.
Somerfield, nearest one is only small, so I never bother with it.
No Aldi or Netto within miles, Don't think they are either in the county of Surrey.0 -

This is not an attack on Asda shoppers nor food snobbery, it is about Asda's lack of social responsibility. They make enough profit to price healthy food within the reach of low income shoppers but instead choose to promote processed foods - which makes it harder (although not impossible) for those on strict budgets to exercise an informed choice. It's no coincidence that Asda stores are often located in areas of social deprivation; whilst that is undoubtedly a good thing for local employment the marketing strategy misses an opportunity to improve the population's health. You could argue that is not what a supermarket is there to do by why not invest in the health of the local community as a means of sustainability???
Lidl by contrast sells quality fresh produce and store cupboard essentials at reasonable prices rather than stacking up piles of junk food at knock down prices on gondola ends. Of course it sells its fair share of treats but it doesn't seek to market these in preference to other food (although often goodies are to be found next to the tills to capture impulse sales). Whilst no supermarket is perfect Asda seems to be willfully ignoring the long-term health of it's customers.
I gotcha now - yes i totally agree -I thought you meant people who bought from Asda. Im my asda, it is the shell-suit brigade that shop there and 100's of notices up around the store reminding you not to leave your handbag on your trolley - a classy lot, i agree.
Not everyone who shops there however is of the same calibre, hence my confusion at your comment, but I misunderstood. You meant the people who buy FOR Adsa, not FROM Asda!!!
:T Im slow but i got there in the end :T
Clowance - I agree about the M&S wine. I save them up and hand them out as gifts at xmas!! People are always really impressed when you give them a bottle of M&S wineSometimes lurking, sometimes posting, but always flying
