Just from a SECURITY viewpoint you should be trying to get WPA [not WAP as previously typo'd] to work in preference to WEP as it is a MUCH improved method of securing your wireless traffic.

Visiting the Linksys UK website and making sure you have the upto date software will help in this. A friend bought one of these from Argos before Xmas and the software on it was so old that WPA wasn't even offered until we downloaded updated software.

how do you upgrade the firmware?

First check what version of firmware your Gateway has - log-in to it and look in the top-right of the blue/black Linksys screens where it's shows the firmware version. If it is 1.01.05 then you've already got the latest version.

If not, then go to the Linksys UK website at:
    http://www.linksys.com/uk

    Then click SUPPORT and DOWNLOADS
Go down the list to WAG354G (ie the Gateway)
then choose FIRMWARE from the list of various downloads

    Should see:
    Home »Support » Technical Support »Downloads » Firmware
    Firmware
    WAG354G - Wireless-G ADSL Home Gateway (Annex A)
    Firmware Date: 8/30/2005
    Firmware Release Version: 1.01.05
    Firmware File Size: 3.5 MB
Download Firmware <===== click this link and SAVE the 3.5Mb .BIN file to your PC's hard-disk

REMEMBER where you SAVED that firmware .BIN to as you'll need to send/upload that file to the Gateway during the upgrade firmware bit below.

To get that Firmware installed on your WAG354G you need to login to the Gateway and follow the instructions - ie Appendix D of the manual, ie:

    Appendix D: Upgrading Firmware
    To upgrade the Gateway’s firmware:
    1. Download the Gateway’s firmware upgrade file...
    2. Extract the file on your computer.
    3. Open the Gateway’s Web-based Utility and click the Administration tab.
    4. Click the Firmware Upgrade tab.
    5. Click the Browse button to find the extracted file, and then double-click it.
    6. Click the Upgrade button, and follow the on-screen instructions.

That manual is a Adobe PDF on the CD that came with the kit, else you can get it from the DOWNLOADS page - User Guides.

Similarly worth checking the software for the PC Card WPC54G is upto date.

AND don't forget if you are going to spend over £60 on wireless products then there's a 10% off coupon in their inhouse PC World Magazine Spring/Summer that's usually lying around in their stores' entrance lobbies.

AND I'm told - but havent proven it - that you can get 1% back via RPoints even for collect at store reservations.

Part of the Furniture 500 Posts Name Dropper Combo Breaker
FYI this offer is back on (Router and USB for £49.99)

I picked another 'set' up even though I have 2 in my network already - It is a bargain...

...Especially when compared to the £109.99 or so I was initally asked for! (Woman on the checkout seemed a little clueless until I showed her the leaflet I had)

The annoying thing about this store (The Headrow one in Leeds) is they had the routers on the bottom floor and the USB adapters on the top floor! :S
