I`m afraid all the massive bills for this winter`s quarter is down to one thing and one thing only, rip off prices from all six of the energy providers.

The government sits back and lets them get away with it just like the banks.
The sooner this motley crew are dispatched at the ballot box the better.
We`ve all got to pay for their uselessness for years to come.

Massive bills are down to a combination of huge price rises, the coldest winter in several years, and a free and easy attitude to energy by the consumer. My direct debit is £34 a month shared between two of us, and I am not the lowest user posting on this board. Amazingly I am still alive to tell the tale.

That was my attitude until I was utterly shocked by the huge rise in my DD payments last year to cover a shortfall and price rises. I now treat gas and electricity as a precious resource, to be used when needed, not just wanted. Although Im turning into my dad, walking round the house turning lights off, muttering swear words under my breath.

When a gas company is making an obscene £2 BILLION profit a year and pensioners don`t know whether to eat or heat, there`s something rotten about the whole system.

Something rotten about the whole country, and the idiots paid millions to run it.

Centrica made a profit of 2 billion pounds, not British Gas. Yes, they are a part of Centrica. British gas made a profit of 379 million, down 34% on the year before.

Im certaily not defending their profit, I would like to see our energy companies brought back under state ownership, but we, as in the electorate vote every 4/5 years for the direction we wish to see out country head. We chose this path, it seems everyone has a very short memory.
  • Have just had our quarterly Gas Bill, £320, really shocked to be honest as we never have it set higher than 18ºC and it doesn't go on in the day at all as we are at work, gets turned off during night too (just on from tea time to bed time).
  • And I thought £121 for 3 months gas bill (actual readings) was bad...I can't complain reading what a lot of you folks have been billed.

I am no Tony Blair or Gordon Brown fan, but it wasn't them who privatised anything that wasn't nailed down. They did, however, introduce a winter fuel payment for pensioners which is presently £250 to £400. :T There are also grants available for cavity wall and loft insulation, which my 70 year old spinster aunt reports has been very effective. What about Tesco profiteering from the poor pensioners - aren't they announcing record profits whilst British Gas' are substantially lower than last year?? Nobody is forced to have their energy supplied by British Gas or to shop at Tesco - if you don't like the way they do business, vote with your feet.

You also seem to be selectively forgetting the economy had a lot of good years when GB was chancellor, and that the current financial crisis is occurring on a global scale. I for one made enough profit on my first little house to move to a much cheaper area and buy my current flat outright. :D So it's lost a bit of value since - the present situation is still a good deal more stable than it was in the 80s under the Tories.

I'd rather have a PM who edited the student newspaper whilst at university and is our longest serving chancellor, than someone who spent his student years smashing up restaurants and now poses for the camera 'washing up' with his cufflinked sleeves rolled down. :rotfl:

I clearly remember rolling my eyes at my dad grumbling "it looks like Blackpool Illuminations in here!" Fast forward 25 years and I am looking at installing motion sensors to cut back on lighting costs ... :p

You have done very well! MY gas bill this quarter (Nov-Feb) was £160, and I'm tight with the heating and showers
