Just a note to say that Bosch and Siemens machines are the same beneath the surface.

Hotpoint has had a lot of owners, used to be part of GEC, now as part of Merloni they are becoming rebadged Indesits.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • I don't know about Siemens or Bosch. I'm sure they are good machines. I moved house recently and bought an LG. It takes a HUGH load (7.5kg) - much higher than most European ones (6kg was the max I found). And it comes with 5 year part and labour warranty. I thought if it breaks down after 5 years, I'll probably replace it anyway.

    Been very happy with it.

Our hotpoint washing machine has been brilliant ~ but recently started making loads of noise when it spins - I thought it would mean having to buy a replacement?

    I'm on my second Bosch.

The first one was truly hammered and coinicided with our first child. We replaced it after about 6 years and it never needed repairing.

The current one is a 1600 spinner and has needed attention within the first year. It's good, but at 1600 spin cycle it spins so violently and noisily that A Bosch engineer needed to adjust it a bit. I think he put some sort of vibration dampening on it and it's much better now.

One thing with it though is that i've discovered we always have to use the "Rinse Plus" button option for an extra rinse. I found this out by trying to rinse out by hand some muddy trousers that had already been washed and the amount of detergent still in them was alarming. They basically lathered up as if i'd added detergent to them.

My parents recently had their washine machine repaired and the engineer told them that for the tiny bit extra amount of water the 1600 (and even 1400) machines remove they are not a good idea because of the extra vibration and stress they put on the other components. Basically they shake themselves to bits.
    Fair comment I suppose !
  • I would also recommend Bosch - we have had our for years and it has always been very good. Before that we had a Hoover which ws totally rubbish - it went wrong just outside the one year guarantee period and it ended up being cheaper to replace it than get it fixed - v unimpressed!
  • Our german made machine spins at 1600 and balances the load before it attempts lift off!! The shaking is minimal, and the difference in dryness between 1000 and 1600 spin is very noticable. We have had it since 1994 without problems.
  • I used www.washerhelp.co.uk to choose my new machine, and settled for the John Lewis made by AEG/Zanussi which was only £299, 3 year guarantee, free delivery and they took the old machine away for £9 (saved humping it to the tip)

I have been very pleased with it, wanted a spin only option and a quick wash prog. and this fits the bill (not top spin speed but that was not the most important thing to me)

Our previous machine was a Hotpoint top loader - which lasted 23 years! Brilliant. They ran out of parts so it finally died.

We now have a Miele front loader and its excellent and extremely quiet.
It had a 5 year guarantee and they were giving another 5 years for £100. I don't ever take extended warranty thingeys but as this worked out at only £20 for each of those 5 years it seemed a good thing to do. We bought it from Frasers in Glasgow and they gave us one of those tank irons (cant remember what they're called - the iron has a huge tank that it sits on and steams for ages). It's a Bosch and has been great, especially for nothing!
  • I'm glad you brought up the subject of top-loaders.
Go to your sink and fill a tumbler with water. Hold it upright. That's a top-loader. Now turn the filled glass on its side so that the water pours out. That's a front loader. These front loaders are a menace. The detergent always rots the door boot, which is one of several reasons why the front loaders are always doing a Quatermass.
You can't defy the laws of gravity. Get a top loader.
