Thanks for the post gooismeid, thought I'd copy the who owns who bit for the folks.

Electrolux: own well over 50 brand names (though not all of them washing machines) Among the more well known ones are AEG, Tricity Bendix, Zanussi.

Candy: own Hoover, Zerowatt and Kelvinator among others.

Merloni: own Ariston, Indesit, New World, Philco, Hotpoint, Creda, Cannon, Philco, GDA, English Electric,Thorn (and others)
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • thank you - very interesting
  • Another vote for Bosch. Good quality and reasonable prices, especially if you search on the web. John Lewis have good prices too sometimes. Bosch is good for driers too. Suggest you spend a little more and get a washer that can spin at 1400 or 1600 rpm as it gets the things like towels much drier so you use less electricity in the tumble drier. They also have lower spin speeds for shirts etc so they don't get creased. Don't get a combined washer/drier.

Glad to see this site mentioned (my brother's site). Only last week I recommended it on the referrals board (didn't know where else to post it to).

He works so hard on the site and loves to share his knowledge.

I think I've posted this before - take a look at this guy's website, a genuine washing machine repair man:
    http://www.washerhelp.co.uk/

He tells you which models are made by which companies (zanussi, hotpoint etc.) and the reasons why more expensive machines last longer. Me, I've got a Bosch Logixx (scratched, so negotiated a discount.... moneysaving gets in the blood!) which has been used daily for 2 years now with nary a peep out of it.

    Hi Jules,

It's interesting to know that it's your brothers site. Quite a few regulars including myself use and recommend it on this board.

  • I've got a Bosch EXXEL 1400 (cold fill) and love it to bits. It's now 3 years old.
Here's a tip I got from an appliance repair friend; every 3 months or so put an eggcupful of bleach through a quick wash cycle. This will stop the drum rubber from going mouldy-looking. Careful though, only a tiny amount of bleach cos it foams a lot. :)
  • Siemens machines have a extended guarantee at the moment, most 5 years and some 10 years. Super quiet in operation and outstandings cleaning. Worth paying a little extra for the warranty. I've also heard that the Bosch machines take much longer to do the wash than other makes. Worth remembering if you need to clothes out in a hurry.
  • Thank you for all your comments - I will have to get my hunting hat on but will definately be looking at Bosch. I always though hotpoint were considered good but maybe thats because there are are biggest advertisers etc...?

    I'm on my second Bosch.

The first one was truly hammered and coinicided with our first child. We replaced it after about 6 years and it never needed repairing.

The current one is a 1600 spinner and has needed attention within the first year. It's good, but at 1600 spin cycle it spins so violently and noisily that A Bosch engineer needed to adjust it a bit. I think he put some sort of vibration dampening on it and it's much better now.

One thing with it though is that i've discovered we always have to use the "Rinse Plus" button option for an extra rinse. I found this out by trying to rinse out by hand some muddy trousers that had already been washed and the amount of detergent still in them was alarming. They basically lathered up as if i'd added detergent to them.
