I'm puzzled over what 'rights' you thought have might have had. The 'right' not to show your receipt seems a somewhat useless right, and I can't imagine why you would choose to enforce it? What other 'rights' were you sticking up for?

Also, how exactly do we know he bought 23 copies of Best? I can't see anywhere the OP says this, am I missing something? Or is it yet another joke I just don't get...

It must seem odd just looking at this thread, but sinw linked to this thread from the MOC thread....HTH

  • Nice to see the tax payers money being wasted!!
Do you really think it was worth wasting police time like that? Just because you were acting like a 5 year old?

When were you wrongly accused of shoplifting? Nowhere in your account of what happened do you say that. As others have said why didn't you just show them your receipt?...end of story.

It would have saved everyone a lot of hassle & time if you had just shown your receipts.
    • Legally you don't have to show a receipt as proof of purchase as there is no requirement in law for a shop to issue you with a receipt.
    • The security guards have no search powers so you do not have to let them search your bags/pockets.
    • There is no theft unless you leave the store with the intention to permanently deprive them of their goods.
    • They can use reasonable force to detain you till police arrive if the had grounds to believe you intended to permanently deprive them of their goods.
But in your case there was no malice by Tescos and they reasonably asked if you had paid for your goods. Why the hell didn't you just show them the reciept?

I set off an alarm when I left Tescos once. I had thought I'd set it off when I entered the store and as I had a Next bag with me I realised when they went off on the way out that there was probably a tag on it.

I approached the security guard with my full trolley when the alarm went off and offered him my receipt. He was very nice about it and asked if I had any CD/DVDs as they were the usual offenders. I explained no, and it's probably the Next bag as I was sure the alarm went off when I entered the store. Sure enough pulled the trousers out and there was the tag.

They never asked to look in my Tesco shopping and even removed the Next tag for me. I asked did they want to see my Next receipt and they said no.

I did complain to Next for leaving the tag on as they had previously left tags on twice previously which meant I had to return to store which was inconvient. They gave me a £20 gift voucher! Not bad for one phonecall!:T

Year ago as a teenager I was in London with my friend and we left a clothes shop that we had not bought anything from. The alarm went off and my friend who was the only one with a carrier bag was almost floored by the SA who grabbed the bag and searched it. We were young and shocked and just left the store. If this happened now or to my DD I would complain very loudly!

  • A receipt is alternatively called "proof of purchase" for a reason.

Hi, any advice would be appretiated...

Today at 11am i went to purchase some magazines from Tesco - i paid, and then thought i would like to go and look at some yougurts. So i toddled off and at the yougurt isle the mags were getting heavy and starining the cheap t plastic bag' so i put them in my rucksack.

Anyhow out of the door i was stopped by security n asked if they cud look in ma bag, i refused and they asked for reciept, i refused. I told them to go n ask the checkout girl who served me (i know her from shopping there regular), anyhow the guys surrounding me in the corner of the cs said they wont to protect them??? then one manager said why dont we just ban him, i asked them if why they wanna look in ma bag are they accusing me of stealing? They said no they were not, i said well why do u want look in ma bag? They said as someone reported me putting stuff in ma bag in the store, so i said u must be accusing me of something then? I took them ova to the checkout girl and the had put up wiv a barage of staff shouting just show them ur reciept.

I would not show them unless police were presant as i think i may have rights, but dont know as i never been stopped before. Eventually the Police arrived and cautioned me, looked through ma bag n only found what i had paid for (obviously) anyhow they let me go after being searched and id checked i have a stop form with grounds say - identifieds as possible offender in shoplifting then says negative result.

Anyhow i extremly upset and angry with my treatment in TESCO and wonder what i can do? I phoned CS who gave me a case number to write a letter of complaint.....

    any thoughts??

I suggest you hot foot it to buy yourself a dictionary and some grammar advice!
  • They were simply doing their job. Its what they are paid to do! xx

you get what you deserve i guess.
you were 'off' with them and they returned the favour.

I often go back into the store, that being the case i make sure i put the things in a bag from the checkout. or carry things with the receipt on top, under my hand in view.

im with the security on this one, and im not usually so sorry!

Another idiot wasting taxpayers money by refusing to do something as simple as showing your receipt. Police could have been sorting out an ASBO call or even something similar as they have to respond to every call they get.

Yet you want attention and cause a fuss over absolutely nothing , you should have given them a receipt straight off then went outside and sprayed tesco's wall with grafitti causing the council to clean it up , its basically the same thing wasting taxpayers money!
