thanks, that makes sense now my rational brain is back on. I did always feel slightly wary about giving my details to goofbay but looks like it's nothing to do with that then (sorry goofbay :o). Good old ebay scaremongering and being greedy. I'll re-sign up to goofbay again, it's too useful to bother about having to change my password every so often. I just hope they manage to stay free.
I'll need to watch my dads account he sets umpteen snipes at a time because he can't be bothered watching auctions. I'm sure he's not alone in that.

I couldn't sign in this morning and yes I used goofbay a few days ago....took an hour of me on live chat (which is fabby by the way).....could sign in with new password to ebay.ca but not the uk one but got it sorted.....

right how do we cancel this goofbay thingy?

If you login on goofbay (text link top right), there should be something like a "my account" option, and there are 5 or so icon options, the rightmost of which is to close/delete your goofbay account.

I know several people have reported being unable to log in to their ebay account for hours or having to phone / use livehelp, but for me it was really straightforward. I went to the ebay login page, clicked the "I've forgotten my password" link below the password box, confirmed my username on the next page, answered 4-5 security questions on the next page, and they then sent a "forgotten password" email with a secure link to a page where you could set your new password. It only took a couple of minutes.

Have been reading some of the comments, not sure if it is goofbay now:confused: my old details would be no use now though eh??? Or is that me being niave?

Once you've got a new password on your ebay account, you'd have to update your goofbay account if you wished to use the sniper, yes, so your old details would be of no use to someone if they'd acquired them via goofbay. However, most pointers seem to indicate this is not a breach of security at the likes of justsnipe/goofbay, and just ebay's security tightening down on mismatching IPs, the question being whether this is a deliberate attempt to discourage the use of 3rd party snipers, or just some new security measures which the snipers are falling foul of.
If this is the case, then eBay need to change the wording and tone of the email because it's rather alarming and concerning to read, and there's a big difference between having knowingly used a sniper, and someone hacking into your account.

    Hi,

I can confirm that this is NOTHING to do with your account being compromised, these emails are blatent lies coming direct from eBay.

You will get these emails if you use any snipe service.

    Thanks
    Matt

Edit, just to note, I had this email about a year ago on my own eBay account and have not had one since, I also use the sniper service. One thing I would say is make sure that your password is lowercase, uppercase, symbols and both letters and numbers and not a dictionary word or persons name.

I'm not questioning, but would like to know how you know this? I think it is quite possible to hack a site like Goofbay and lift usernames/passwords. I know someone who possibly could.... i'm sure he isn't the only one.

I can understand exactly why ebay would send these messages, and I can understand their motive for telling you fibs if that were the case.
  • Goofbay's admin have posted a message on their forum:

so that's their confirmation that no-one's accounts have truly been compromised. Hopefully they can get to the bottom of this and relay to us whether it's overzealous automated security or a deliberate attempt to discourage sniping.
