Ebay account hi-jacked

  • I'd posted in the other thread about this this morning as I received the same email this morning, and have used goofbay's sniper many times, most recently on Friday.
My question really is whether our accounts have genuinely been hacked because the sniper site's have been compromised and our details stolen, or if it's just an automatic thing from ebay that's resetting our accounts, for example if it's detecting a difference in IP addresses between our own computer and the sniper, because ebay don't want us using snipers. There's a big difference, and I'm hoping it's the latter, but some people have reported seeing lots of strange listings on their accounts. There's no evidence of this on mine, but then maybe eBay had already cleared all that away.

Good point. I have only had an email saying my account has been used by an unauthorised person. The email states that they have removed listings and credited any fees incurred. I started using the sniper service before Christmas and have used the same computer. It seems a bit odd that someone would list items on your account as how are they going to get hold of the proceeds. My password for PAYPAL is nothing like my ebay one and I do not use the same password twice.
Matched betting proceeds so far: £505.00
  • Yep, sounds like the same email. My password was the same for my ebay and paypal accounts (admittedly stupid & rectified now!) so despite the reassurances in the email that my details were secure, if someone had genuinely hacked my account, they'd have easily found the linked paypal account and could have accessed it. Luckily that hadn't happened, and I keep it empty anyway, but there was the potential to find cc and bank details there.
  • Hi welnik

From my memory so you may need to try this a few times

From the home page got to:

'Help' in top right corner of page

    then: Membership & Account

    then: Protecting your account

Then: Securing your account and reporting identity theft

    then: 'contact us'

The 'Live Help' feature is in a little box about half way down the page (which has the heading - More help: Getting in touch with eBay)

    hope this helps :0)

Just had my account hacked too, luckily it was restored within about 10 minutes - but guess what sniping site I use, yep...Goofbay. Cancelling my account as we speak. I had a right panic attack there, about 10 auctions just ended tonight. I'm too tired to rant at the min, this is the last thing I needed to be dealing with at midnight aargh.

They can sometimes be too "clever". I received this message after coming home from overseas, apparently they didn't like that somebody registered in the uk was accessing account from other country (how did I dare :D)

I can tell you that all these alarming messages from eBay stating, "It appears that a third party accessed your eBay account and used it to list items without your authorization..." are part of a crack down by eBay on third-party services such as Goofbay and JustSnipe that don't use the eBay API. eBay wants third-party service providers to pay for the privilege of allowing eBay users to snip or bid on items. Of course these (and many other) hitherto 'free' services will now have to pass on the cost to customers or cease operating.

Let me make it crystal clear. These eBay warnings have absolutely nothing to do with account takeovers, hijacks or phishing attempts. They are purely a belated revenue gathering exercise in a time when eBay needs all the cash flow it can generate. From eBay management's perspective - it's too bad if a few thousand innocent customers get screwed. It's all about the money!

Yeah, happened to me too following my first GoofBay snipe. Surely this can't mean if I want to keep using a free bid sniping service I'll have to re-activate my account each time can it?

What a nightmare! Some of the best deals are the ones that end at 04:46am or the likes, and I'm fed up of setting my alarm!!

    Hi,

I can confirm that this is NOTHING to do with your account being compromised, these emails are blatent lies coming direct from eBay.

You will get these emails if you use any snipe service.

    Thanks
    Matt

Edit, just to note, I had this email about a year ago on my own eBay account and have not had one since, I also use the sniper service. One thing I would say is make sure that your password is lowercase, uppercase, symbols and both letters and numbers and not a dictionary word or persons name.
