  • sorry to hear another local firm going under (of sorts).. hope Rosedean works out if they keep prices same (though will Roedean'ers be loking for a rebate??).

when i last went there (on business, mind! delivering food..), most places needed an overhaul- as in Bob Builder would need a few mates!

Just to back up what others say. I wouldn't worry too much about the 'snob' aspect especially if other kids are going. I was on an assisted place at an expensive public school while living on a council estate. Some kids were horribly snobby, but lots weren't and I had lots of experiences and opportunities that wouldn't have been open to me otherwise.
  • Agree, fc123 about the terrible HPC pervy comments. I never know how people can even write these things, as if it's acceptable and appropriate.

I agree with the comments above, there are some good reasons to go to Roedean! Children adapt and she'll know people from her year. It's not as if it's some inner city comprehensive that's merging, she's already at a private school. I think she might enjoy it.

  • I would prefer not to say which grammar school (Sheriff or High School) but I am amazed that Rugby subsidise a state school.

I cannot make out if your child attends Rugby, but the uniforms are very strange (girls in ankle length skirts!!), but the students from Rugby are always in M&S doing shopping and bad shoes, ripped jackets and untidy hair are the norm for both boys and girls.

Grief! Sorry to hijack thread, fc123, but I used to live opposite the Laurence Sheriff school (the field on Hillmorton Road), and had to walk past all the boys sitting there in their breaks when I was at that self-conscious age! I went to Dunsmore (now Ashlawn Rd or something). My brother was at Rugby - they weren't allowed to go into food shops (even the Town House boys weren't allowed to) when he was there. Sorry, just brought back some memories (of 46 years ago, and more).

Having the name Roedean on her CV, or Facebook whatever must still be worth a lot. It may just swing getting that job interview in future years. So purely for your daughter go for it. For your other stuff I have no idea what you should do.

Good school, lots of resources, maximises her chances of getting her desired GCSE's, joing with a group of her peers.

    What's not to like?

Having schooling disrupted is hideous for you and her, but as mitigation of your loses goes - this is probably as good as it gets.

In a previous life I knew one of the Governors of St Mary's.
I keep meaning to ask...is the current life going OK?

Go for Roedean! I grew up in a similar situation - my mum sent my sister and I to a private girls school and my brother was sent to Rugby. She really couldn't afford to send us to any of these and remortgaged the house to buy herself fancy clothes and a Lotus so she could pull up looking flash at the parents evening - other Rugby parents were arriving in helicopters! Funny thing is our house was a dump - this was the 80's and we still had all the furniture from 1960, stained carpets, holes in the sofa arms she used to balance magazines on and a stinky old dog that looked like a matted carpet walking around. That said, it didn't matter because the parents never came to visit - they all lived in stately homes up north, and the kids that came to stay were generally so excited to be escaping their dull parents and tearing up London that they couldn't care less! :D

This made me laugh........did she do the house up when you all grew up or is it still the same? Would be retro chic style now.
