My daughters school went bust today.

I don't do dogma either.
The fierce protection of our young, it's human nature (although not for all sadly). And I'm with you 100% on the 'Do as you would be done by.'
So it's all decided then.

my children would be out of the state sector like a shot....just for the extra chances/wider education you get in life from doing so.
I don't think that's necessarily true. My two went / go to a very good state school. I went to an excellent state school which I believe was ahead, in many respects, of the private school my sister attended.
It's not a straightforward decision. There are pros and cons to both. Ultimately, it comes down to the merits of each individual school and how it serves the needs of each pupil.0 -
Agreed, maybe I am basing it too much on the fee paying schools available around here where the choices for sport and the chance to take exams earlier and in a slightly wider subject choice is available.
As I said, my middle and youngest son are at excellent schools at the moment but my eldest son is at not such a good school (didn't realise until middle son went to high school, just how poor eldest's is). This is all going to change during their education as the schools are merging into one big school, which I fear is going to be at the detriment to them.
I also can't deny it, I am a snob at heart....I have middle class values whilst being stuck in the scum class. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Personally I think the offer of going to Roedean is too much of a chance to pass up.
I'd like to second this.
Fc123, if you were thinking of moving your base back to London (from some of your posts, you seem to be from/know about Blackheath and environs), I wouldn't. I have lived in both Brighton and London, and it is far nastier here in SE3/SE7/SE10 than in Brighton.
I went to an independent girls' school, and you will find - I think - that not everyone at Roedean has wealthy and sophisticated parents. My parents were not wealthy or sophisticated, and I suffered quite a bit - as children do - from not being able to have new clothes to show off after every holiday and half-term, from not having my birthday cake sent down from Harrods, from not having a big house with swimming pool and ponies to take my friends home to. But I learned social graces that work well in any walk of life - and which I do not see among the TT state school students on the 108 bus at 4.00pm - the experience has served me very well in life.
Go for it. :-)YouGov: £50 and £50 and £5 Amazon voucher received;
PPI successfully reclaimed: £7,575.32 (Lloyds TSB plc); £3,803.52 (Egg card); £3,109.88 (Egg loans)0 -
What a fabulous opportunity for your DD - though sad about her previous school.
I hope it goes well for you all.0 -
Rodean gets my vote, especially as she'll already have a lot of mates there. If a 'them and us' mentality develops then she'll have an 'us' to be part of too.
Great opportunity as well.
Don't worry about the Lady xxx-ski thing. Nice people don't care and those that do are best avoided IME.0 -

same here, for no extra cost on your part, but an improved service/education etc on your daughters part, plus 11 others can move over with her........
go for it,smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Go for Roedean! I grew up in a similar situation - my mum sent my sister and I to a private girls school and my brother was sent to Rugby. She really couldn't afford to send us to any of these and remortgaged the house to buy herself fancy clothes and a Lotus so she could pull up looking flash at the parents evening - other Rugby parents were arriving in helicopters! Funny thing is our house was a dump - this was the 80's and we still had all the furniture from 1960, stained carpets, holes in the sofa arms she used to balance magazines on and a stinky old dog that looked like a matted carpet walking around. That said, it didn't matter because the parents never came to visit - they all lived in stately homes up north, and the kids that came to stay were generally so excited to be escaping their dull parents and tearing up London that they couldn't care less!

I would go for Roedean but what does your daughter think ?"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

I agree. What would your daughter like to do? I think at her age she should have some idea where she would like to carry on her education. A bit of a family chat would make sure her choice is for the right reasons.
fc123, am I right your Brighton branch is in " The Lanes "? I had a pal trading with 2 shops there, now sadly closed. Told me that on a £400k a year turnover it didn`t make a lot of money.0
