I have been looking for a firmware update with no much success, Sony dont even seem to have it listed on their site.

I seen some talk on a site of it being a rebadged Liteon so and so and that drivers/firmware etc would work with it but not so sure.

    Poor show from Sony really.

So then...as the Sony seems to be getting a less than favourable review from a few members.

I was wondering if there is anyone on the site that HIGHLY RECOMMENDS another DVD DL 16x (min) drive..

Does not have to have LABEL printing ability. although it sounds very cool...this is only becasue I already have a large collection of blank discs and I woant to use them before I start buying any others

    Only requirements, must be black.......

just installed my sony dvd rewriter it plays cds but when it tries to read a dvd the error message appears.

Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

im on windows xp and using media player 10, can anyone in nice and easy terms tell me what to download and were from and what to do with it, thanks wee georgie

    Hi Wee Georgie,

What you need is the MPEG 2 codec. This, along with a few others, is included in XP Codec Pack (1.3.3), available free from:

    http://www.xpcodecpack.com/

Just double-click on the .exe file to start the install process.

It will also install Codec Detective and Media Player Classic unless you tell it not to by deselecting them in Tools during the install process.

    Enjoy

    Hi,

I bought the drive and upgraded the firmware to MYS3, site below: -

    http://www.cdr.cz/dvd_rekordery/sony/dwg120a.html

Install is in english even if the site is not.

    Cheers

    Hi Mark,

Any reason for that particular firmware and has it improved the drive?

Also how do you actually complete a firmware upgrade.

This drive of mine is chronic, I cant even install a new printer as it doesnt recognise the disc as even being in the drive!

The firmware upgrade is self extracting when using winzip/winrar and installs itself, old FW on my drive was MYS1. Havent had chance to test for any improvements yet although mine was working ok anyway

Thanks for the link, I had a good look around the various sony pillar to post sites and found they have it tucked away somewhere!

Also upgraded from MYS1, obviously was an improvment as it finally allowed me to install the printer but it still needed a kick to tell it there is a disc in the tray!

I should have known better than to buy Sony, especially when it comes to the RAM market, I installed a Panasonic DL multi drive to my laptop and it never fails to read anything at first time of asking.

Also works with 1Click, whereas the Sony drive doesn't have any of it, will need to put that to test with this new firmware sometime.

Thought Sony might have been a bit more on the ball with this one since its been knocking about in Oz for a bit.

The sony drive I recieved on friday 5th worked first time. The firmwire was mys3 without the need to upgrade. This is a top notch dvd drvie for nearly 40% of its retail value in a box from a shop.
    Link now removed! sorry

So is this drive any good? I need one but dont want to buy a load of problems. Also, not too keen on Sony generally.

This drive is available from just over £30.00 in lots of places too.

It does seem from this thread that not everything is hunky dory with the Sony's. I have recently bought my second NEC drive - ND-4571 (which has labelflash technology for burning images on special DVD's) but the ND-4570A is the same minus the Labelflash. I bought mine from SCAN - they are local to me so didn't have to pay postage - for about £28. The 4570A is about £25. I would recommend these drives - I did quite a bit of investigation before choosing my first NEC drive (3540) which is great but didn't write to DVD-RAM.
