Yes it is DVD-RW as well. They are very easy to fit in DELL computers - depends which one you have though. The 5100 and 5150 are very easy... you can either swap the existing one for the new one or add it as an extra drive.. you may need to set the drive as a Master or Slave on the back of the drive.0 -
Do you know how hard it is to fit a dvd-rw to a dell laptop?0

I would imagine which laptop you have got but on mine you would need to buy a Dell DVD-RW and it would just be a matter of undoing a screw and sliiping the old drive out and putting the new one in. There should be documentation online on the DELL website for your specific model.0 -
Problem is I want a DVD-RAM which Dell dont seem to do, the laptop is an 8200. I have had the fixed drive out (has flexi bay drive too) which seems to be a standard 12.7mm drive, but I am not so sure if the rear connections on all these drives are universal, it also has a part cage around drive which screws into the drive so any drive I buy would need to have screw holes in the right place.
Some of the drives out there also say they have to be set to master, would this pose a problem, is it likely that the hard drive is set to master and the current drive is slaved.
This is that only RAM drive I have came across and it does state 'Set as "Master" drive. (cannot be changed)'

Most laptops need a slim line DVD writer which this one is not.
These are a bit of a price. One way of doing it is to buy a USB2 enclosure and put this drive in that then just connect to your laptop via USB0 -

Hi, I have bought two of these drives one for my desktop and one for my father, however I know my laptop takes a 12.7mm drive, just some of the previous posters seemed to have knowledge of upgrading, wondered if they have much to do with laptops as I have built desktops before and done plenty upgrading but never been into the guts of a laptop, only ever fitted memory and mini pci wireless cards.
I dont want to go down the enclosure road, I either want to get a RAM drive to replace my DVD/CDRW drive in my ancient laptop or if it was going to be a hassle (which it's proving to be) buy a new machine with a RAM drive, probably the cheapest Acer I can get hold of.0 -
It will be a rebadged model. There is another Sony which supports DVD-RAM the DRU820A
