Im trying to stay away from sweet things as we are both trying to get a beach-bod for the easter hols!
Don't deny yourself! I've just made yet another batch of Nigella's breakfast bars and even though they are sweet and calorific they are also highly nutritious and very filling! Hi SmallL,
I would rather pad mince dishes out with extra veg, beans and lentils because the oats can really swell and use a lot of liquid and you can end up with a sort of solid savoury flavoured porridge. If you do want to add oats it's best to add just a few at a time.
This thread has more ideas that may help:
Porridge Oats
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

Thanks for the mackerel in oats recipe! I found some in the supermarket bargain bin a few weeks ago. They were delicious, and very filling, presumably due to the oats. And very Scottish.
And I must confess my cooking "Achilles heel " is timings. Just get a couple of timers. IKEA "Stam". Simple, clockwork. £2.03 each. And colour coded: I've got red (meat) & green (veg'), they also do blue (fish?) & yellow (?). Even the professionals use timers. I've seen them with a whole row going! The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
I put them in veggie stews to thicken them, and in smoothies as kittykat mentioned. Was it the porridge he didn't like or the fact it had fruit in it? And how did he make the porridge, with water, or some milk, there are differnt ways. Was it too thick or too thin. I make mine with water and add a spoon of Coffee Mate, or you could pour cold milk on the top in the dish. You can put jam or honey in it, I put sultanas and stewed apples in mine, very nice, sometimes tinned peaches, yummy. Maybe try different things. Seems a shame to give up after one attempt.

I agree, maybe try a different combination.I make my porridge with water and add some ground cinnamon.I eat it with a dash of milk and some honey.
You can add oats to stews and also to your bread,if you're a bread maker.I substitute 50-70g of flour with rolled oats when making a loaf with 600g flour. You don't need to add more water. This is with a BM.

I am trying to cut calories so swapped my 'heavy on the cheese' potato pie toppings for equal amounts cheese, seeds and oats.:)
I've just dug the recipe out and it says: -
Preheat the oven to 180c / gas mark 4. The tin is a 20cm square tin and it says to cook it for 30 minutes. Also, I tend to cut it pretty quickly after taking it out the oven as it firms up quite a bit.
Oh, another also! I keep it in the freezer and take a piece out the night before I want it. It does keep in the fridge, but not for very long (the first time I made it I just kept it in an airtight box and it was furry after a couple of days!)
Hope that helps. I've just made mine ready to go in the oven laterGrocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100

I've just made your Savoury Flapjack & it ROCKS! I used double quantities (large household) but didn't have quite enough cheese in the open packet, so used a teaspoon of Marmite too, and it's nearly all gone already, although it hasn't actually cooled down yet. Big Thank You from me!Angie - GC Aug25: £207.73/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

hi, i make a smoothie breakfast drink for me and my partner each day. i think its 3/4 - 1 cup of oats, 2 small bananas, 8 pitted prunes mix with water for a loose mix and whack it in microwave for 5 mins. let it cool if you have time. add some milk and whizz up. its two of your 5 a day out of the way and oats are meant to be really good for you. hope this helps someone. we bought a smoothie to go machine but half the time i put everything in a large jug and use a hand blender. i tend to get it ready the night before as partner is up anytime before 3-6 am for work. up to you either hot or cold.Grocery Challenge 24th Feb-28 Dec 2012 £2000/£1404

Think I will have to try the savoury flapjacks for OH's pack lunch box as they'll make a difference from the sweet ones.0
