Blockbuster DVD fine...

Comments

  • i rent dvds weekly from BB and on Friday evening, as i was renting another they advised me that there was a £2 fine on my account for late return.

I advised them this was certainly not the case and the 7 years ive held my account ive never been late. The last DVD was returned at 21:55 last sunday evening and said that i was happy to wait for them to check the CCTV which would confirm this.

No problem he said and the fine was removed from my account. they were claiming i had sent the DVD back monday at 16:30!
  • well thanks...and there i was thinking this was a forum that provided a bit of sensible advice and empathy for people in the same financial situation...guess i was wrong!

the worst offenders (Paparika / chuckley / Willsnarf1983 / snuggles) again in my defence, mondays to fridays my bum generally does not touch my sofa...by the time i have finished my working day and eaten something then it is straight to bed because i am exhausted...

and yes working for a charity does have soemthing to do with it because i spend my entire day working with adults who have autism which is physically and emotionally very draining!

so forgive me that i firstly am not able to spend my entire day chanting a mantra to remind me take the dvds back to blockbuster and secondly that i earn so little for doing this demanding job that i have asked for some advice about if theres anything i can do about the fine i have received...

of course i will pay it if there is no alternative and i will probably never rent a dvd again now i know how much it costs for a late fee!

everyone else thank you for taking the time to reply to me...at least you had some constructive suggestions to make!

I used to work in Blockbuster and if you explain the situation to the staff calmly, politely and with respect of the rules, they may reduce the fine. They won't be able to write it off altogether because it's a big fine. You should bear in mind, after a certain amount of time (after you returning the DVDs and the fine remaining unpaid) the balance will be passed onto a collections agency and then they won't be able to do anything about it.

Hopefully you haven't already kicked up a fuss and shouted at the staff, so they may still show some compassion for your situation. Just remember that it's not the shp staff's fault that the fines are high - it has nothing to do with them, so don't abuse them!

If you don't get any further with those in-store, talk to head office.

    Hope that helps.

oh come on,no need for a sob story
i dont rent DVD's as i often dont get a chance to watch them let alone return them
you jobs your job.it has no bearing on you not bothering to return them
as for never renting a dvd again................why not just lay down in the supermarket and have a tantrum as well?
i tried the online rentals but it took me 2 months to watch one so its a waste of time for me.seems perfect for you

The people you slag off actually did give you sensible advice!

eg: learn from your mistake; read the T & C; just pay up etc etc.

No point coming here crying over spilt milk hoping there is a way to get away with it. Take responsibility, and the advice given here, and don't get your dvds from a library as you can't be relied on to return them even when they gave you 3 days to watch them!
  • Maybe pay the fine, reduced if possible, then get an online Lovefilm type account - no late fees again :)

Fault aside, if you speak to them and ask nicely and smile, the right person may well write off the fine for you.

I think you already know they don't have to, and your justification of a lower fee is a little unfounded and unreasonable, right?

I did this once and sent DH off to return them, telling him it would probably be about a fiver. My mistake was renting them on a different day to our normal - I had the normal return day in my head!

He was not impressed when they asked for £22!! I still haven't heard the last of it!

He paid it though and didn't expect to do otherwise. Although he did ask the guy if it would be cheaper for him to buy them! :D

    Lesson learnt and all that...

BTW, I work with a similar client group and at the time was also at uni, plus volunteering, plus family...

Yeah it is easy done but if we are going to rent them then we need to take responsibility for getting them back too.

if u cant return on time coz u have a busy life then u really had no place borrowing in the 1st place. and to then complain when they quite rightly fine you is just downright silly.

as others have mentioned go use an online monthly service for x amount of dvd's. i say lovefilm via pigsback as u get 1250 points (£12.50) just for a free trial.

Joanneg83, thanks for the reply, sorry you didn't like it.

We all have busy lives, but we get on with it.

Can i give you constructive advise, get a calender and write down when the dvd's need to go back and delegate who should return them.

But really MSE is here to help save money, not help people get out of paying for a fine if they are in the wrong.
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?
