  • just leave your reading in the window Mrsk33, we mostly are not that fussed to see the meter, if you are in a respectable area (little meter tampering ever gos off ) I only am keen to see the meter in the rough chavvy areas where I find lots of bypassed meters. Its just red tape after all. Sensible people know when their meters are faulty. We dont come with gas leak detectors anyway

Its not a meter reading they are after though, I provide those online. Its a gas meter safety check, 2 yr legal requirement.

I tried that, I am off for over a week at christmas. They said they don't work after 21 dec to 2 jan. So helpful.

How can I arrange a time pray tell when I have no holidays left to use from work.
Oh well, you'll have to ask for unpaid time off. It'll be cheaper than the court & locksmith fees you'll incur otherwise.
  • yeah, we know that, but we have to read the meter as proof we have seen the meter. Its just a regulation set by OFGEM, I work for BG and EDF, EDF dont take a blind bit of notice about the 2 year rule anyway. i have been 4 years working for EDF and havent done one yet, and i do all "must read " two year inspections for them .BG are copying them now also ( because its too expensive for warrants etc ) Just stick your read in window, 99% of meter readers will accept it

I would also add that the suppliers are pushing for a five year safety check requirement. Judging by the way that EDF operate they have decided to implement it before its been ratified. I know of Brit Gas properties who no ones got into in ten years. They check how much you are paying for your bills, if they are normal range, they dont push for access. Npower are one of the stricter suppliers ( I used to work for them also ) but their meter readers will be like all the others and just take the reading from the window. I work Saturdays, cant you spare a minute on a Saturday for them if you want to be sure that your meters are ok. there will be a customer verification element to these required meter readings also. after all, you are using thousands of pounds worth of energy so its only fair they have a quick look every couple of years

they dont do them in my area in S.Yorks, I have only recently done a few business meters on the two year inspection rule, and that was on the fourth year of trying to get into certain business premises, none at all on domestic meters, and my company have the contract to do all their work.. as i say, just leave your reads on your door. some people dont want strangers in their properties for a number of reasons. If it is about access times, we work up to 8pm at night on "must reads "so surely they can come round late one evening. I have one evening a week when i work late just for those people. i dont know what area you live in or what company has the contract for EDF, but part of the "must read " contract is to be able to visit in unsociable hours., that is eves and weekends. No supplier would expect people to be booking holidays off work etc just for a minutes look at the meters

I'm only going on what the lady at EDF said, that it was weekdays only AM or PM and they couldn't specify a time, which would have been helpful as I am in after five. And she said that I needed to either arrange to do it on work holiday or book some time off. This is Gainsborough, Lincs by the way.

thats my area DN postcode, we , G4S, do EDF work in Gainsborough and we def work after 5pm and Saturdays. That call centre lady is misinformed. All " must read" 2 year inspections are specified to work those hours, otherwise we would nt be able to fulfill the contract for the people (like me for example) who are never in. Sorry to say tho MrsK33, there are certain areas in Gainsborough that I wouldnt be keen on accepting a window read and would like a quick peek at the meters. I know the people who work in Gainsborough and one of them works Saturdays for sure.Tell call centre that you will switch supplier if they can t accomodate you. Holidays are too precious to waste on a meter read
