my cat had this problem when younger after 3 operations loads of vets bills after insurance was cancelled because of it. Found a vet who helped and we filtered all the cats water put lots of bowls of water around the house. He's now 15 years old considering they gave his 24 hours before one operation I think it worked for him.

When my male cat had this many years ago (before prescription foods I think) I was told to boil his water and filter it - I used a coffee filter - and to add water to his wet food, just enough to make it runny IYSWIM and keep him off dry food for a month and then slowly introduce a quality brand back into his diet.I also started leaving water bowls outside, upstairs etc to encourage him to drink more.

He never had a problem again.

Thank you all for your thoughts, can anyone recommend a wet food that is low in magnesium, apart from C/D?
I would be interested to know what katlady and orlao feed their cats, I do have bowls of water all over the house, plastic jugs actually as he won't drink out of a china bowl, only clear plastic or glass.

    Have you tried Burns?

They are now doing wet food but their dried is also excellent. Wetting the dried food will increase the fluid intake

    good luck

Remember that the Burns wet (If you use it, OP) is a complementary not a complete food so would need to be fed with dry & dry is best avoided if the Cat gets these issues. It's a shame cause I saw this food too & got all excited until I saw it wasn't complete.
  • please be very careful if u decide to change his food to one that isnt for his specific conditon-make sure u chat to ur vet first!
your cat has a diffrent conditon from other cats, as he is male, his urethra is very narrow/long compared to female cats (they hardly every get blocked, usually just get cystitis)

blocked bladders are idiopatic, mainly in male, overweight cats from a young adult age, can be stress related, fluids need to be increased

have u tried getting the food from another supplier, or a different brand of urinary food

Sorry, I no longer have that cat, he died age 13/14 some years ago but I always fed more wet than dry and used premium biscuits, anything but supermarket own brand, go cat and whiskas type......

I buy the c/d from Nutrecare which is the cheapest supplier I could find. I thought if I could give him wet food for one meal and c/d for the other it might help with the water issue.
After a bit of research into wet cat food it seems Kitekat has very low magnesium.
My vet said low magnesium wet or dry and recommended c/d.
I am beginning to think it is stress, or maybe laziness, not wanting to go outside for a pee in the cold. I understand if the urine builds up it is more likely to cause a blockage.
Maybe a litter tray would be a good idea, at least during the cold weather.
I was reading about Feliway but it's not something I can afford right now.
  • u can only try, and see how it goes. i presume u cant claim for the food, but i guess u may need that incase it reoccurs.

definately try a litter tray if he doesnt have one already, as ur right u dont want him holding on! if that helps u may need to keep it down long term?

its all a trial really to see what suits him to prevent it happening again.
    good luck

One of my 3 cats suffers with struvite crystals, we put him on hills s/d dried food at first, and then have moved onto c/d for maintenance.

The one thing we do make sure we do now is soak the dried food before serving it, (we now do this with all 3 cats, even the ones that are still on a normal diet), this way it ensures that they get a good intake of water even if they aren't drinking out of their water bowl. We also find running the tap gently for a bit helps as well, as they like to have a play and a drink at the same time. I'm also considering getting a water fountain too.

OP, I think a tray sounds like a good idea if your boy is crossing his lega rather than going outside when the weather is bad. They don't have to be incredibly intrusive, ours is the hooded variety which cuts out litter being kicked all over the floor, and the smell!
