  • Did anyone else read that with a Margot Leadbetter accent? :o
    Who? Should I Google her?

ETA: Couldn't resist I had to Google it. Seriously I'm not like Margot!

Personally, I like to mix, and I like my children to mix, with all sorts of different people. How else do we learn to understand and respect our society?
I prefer not to mix with people that think it's OK to let their children see !!!!!! and I'd rather my children didn't mix with theirs. I don't think any of us are less respectful of other people. I have friends that live in ex local authority housing and friends that live in grand houses. It makes no difference to me, what does is their outlook on life.

Yes my son's schools were faith schools and I have worked in faith and non faith schools. Maybe your standards are different to mine I know mine are particularly high but I'm not prepared to lower them. The area I live has schools above the national average statistically and mone sons attended the best in the area but it doesn't make a jot of difference. To be fair you haven't actually worked in the school so you don't know what goes on day to day.

How do you know that I haven't worked in the school?

Before I returned to work in FE as a Lecturer,I worked as a volunteer in school for several years,so saw first hand the behaviour of the kids.

I also have experience of the behaviour of the children in private school too,so I am qualified to give an opinion on both sectors. I can say confidently that the behaviour, and the reaction to that behaviour, was remarkably similar in both types of schools,as the catchment area was identical. I obviously cannot speak for all state schools, but nor can you.

I also doubt that my standards are lower than yours,in fact I suspect the reverse may be true. I am actually well known for throwing students out of my lectures for using bad language,or messing around,I give a warning, then out. I wont tolerate that kind of behaviour at all.

My older children went through both sectors(different children) and came out with similar A level results and obtained good degrees from red brick Universities, and are beginning professional careers. At the first sign of a problem we would have addressed the situation and taken steps to remedy it,to ensure that outcome.

So state or private education is not the arbitor of sucess imo,it is the child, the motivation, and largely the parents who determine sucess. It is a bit of a cop out imo to blame the educational system,if you have it is within your power as a parent to change things, and don't, then the blame also lies with the parent.
  • I could spend ages giving examples of where I disagree but to be honest I can't be bothered. I've seen enough of the state system to know my younger children will not be going through it. Other's can choose what they feel is best for their children.

You may have seen enough of the state system in your area, but that experience is not necessarily indicative of everyones experience or of state education per se.

We can only comment with validity,on our personal experiences, and the outcome for our own children. My children have done well in the state system,(and I largely believe that is due to the whole picture, not just the educational aspect) and I have no experience of incidents such as you describe,so as you say we will have to agree to differ.

As have my sister and I, without university! :D

It's completely about the individual and their circumstances.

But would she have friends living in ex LA housing? Can't say I ever watched it but I assume not.

At the time, I doubt it.

    But ex-LA housing?

What about friends in current LA/council housing?!
  • My kids went to state schools, the eldest finished uni ( secondary was a high school) and has a very good job (in her field), next one is at uni (ex grammar school) and the youngest is at grammar, but I don't think he will go onto uni as he just doesn't seem so interested. I am glad he is at the Grammar as he is being pushed (he is a little lazy)!
My neices are at a private school which educates them from 5 - 16 I do wonder how they will cope going on to do A levels at the local school. It also seems there is a lot of 'extras' to pay for and lots of expensive birthday parties they have to attend!
It will be interested to see what the future holds. Of course you don't know the best option until you can use good old hindsight!
