  • Of course, we Americans are pushy and have strange ideas about customer service....

Ahh but this is Britain, and in Britain there is no such thing as customer service!

Maybe if we had more people like you around then things would be better - so keep up the good work!

PS. OK, that was a pretty sweeping statement I made and you can get good customer service here. But sadly its not the norm.

Been to butchers today and got 1kg of sausages, 750g of bacon, dozen eggs, 8 lamb chops and a massive joint of beef called a Gorister (sp) for £20

That is enough meat to do a family of 5 for over a week and we know where it has all come from.

Some might think that is expensive but if you saw the enormous joint I've got I think you would agree what a great deal I've got.

Interesting. Would that be Rawrenstall Asda as we get most of our food from there?
My beloved started getting fruit and veg from Bury Market and has stopped because it goes off far quicker than Asda's.
We would love to buy meat in Waterfoot and support our local butcher but we thought he must be more expensive than Asda.

may i recomend H. Trickett butcher in Waterfoot - by the traffic lights - one with the red front.

We've been going to Harvey for the last few years since moving into the valley, wonderful chap.
Would say overall for our weekly shop he is less or about the same as the equvalent supermarket.

and like others said - you have to look at what you get - he charges the same for 2 chicken fillets as the supermarket does for 4 - but the weight is the same, and isn't pumped full of water. and comes from a local source.
Lamb - he knew i was often in the Yorkshire Dales so when ordering he says you may have seen this fella bounding through the field on my trip..

We buy from Rawtenstall Market these days. The one right by the top entrance does £10 parcels, a mixture of chops, steak etc feeds the two of us (old and appetites of sparrows) for weeks - but most importanly - far better quality then any supermarket.
Funnily enough, just got back from the fireworks at our son in Blackburn and as we went past Harvey's I remarked that we should start having a look in there again. We're getting a taste back for real butchers' meat now.
I used to catch rabbits in the Yorkshire Dales, me and me ferrets. Now that's good tasting meat when it's fresh and you caught it yourself :-)
  • which is the best value for buying meat?
  • I don't know about value but I am lucky that I have a rare breeds butcher where I live and all the meat is sourced locally at Brogdale. Its a bit dearer than Tescos, but the quality and taste make it well worthwhile . I buy the odd rubber chicken from Mr T when its on offer for casseroles or curries ect but my butcher even does free range large eggs at 1.95 a doz and they are lovely with rich yellow yolks, not like those pale insipid things from Mt Ts
A couple of weeks agao my butcher did me a huge ham hock chopped off the bottom of the biggest leg of pork I've seen and he only charged me a pound for it .He will also if you was do you a bag of bones for making stock for nought.A real old fashioned butchers ,his shop always has a long queue outside it and its bang opposite a tesco metro

Our butcher checks the supermarket price and charges 5-10% less every week.
I think the meat is so much nicer from him too, it's good to strike a friendship with your local butcher, it's amazing the amount of gossip he has ;)

Depends on your definition of value...some meat is cheap in the supermarket but it doesn't taste as good as the meat I get from the butcher so I don't buy it. We would prefer to eat less good meat than have lots of low quality cheap meat if we were on a tight budget for food.

I shop at Mr T's for convenience, free parking and with the price clearly on everything you know how much it is.

Value is not the same as price.

For me, I'd happy to buy chicken and lamb at a supermarket, but the beef and pork always tastes like crap.

Value should be based on what your going to do with it.
