Thanks I agree with you all round. Butcher is much better, our butcher will even sell you one solo egg if that's all you want.
The quality is much higher than the supermarket, and my dogs get a bone each too.

I used to always buy everything from the supermarket but since using MSE I now shop in the local butcher, fishmonger and market and don't actually find it costs any more as I only buy the exact quantity that I want and it is all much fresher and will therefore keep longer if I need to.0

I went in to my local butcher for the first time a few months ago and will be going back It was the first butchers I have ever been in that has not had "that smell" that has always put me off them in the past. We explained we didn't shop at a butchers usually and that we decided we wanted better quality. We stood and chatted for over half an hour! Ended up buying 5 X 1 lb bags of beef mince and a load of chipolatas for about 16 quid, maybe a bit more expensive than the supermarket normal but cheaper than finest. Great quality, the only problem was the chipolatas were too salty but it may have been a bad batch.
The best thing was he let up look at the chicken up close, it was dry - unlike slimy supermarket chicken and smelled gorgeous!!!!!!
I never used to be able to touch chicken, I would have groped that all day!
We got to see meat as it is meant to be and have a great chat with our lovely butcher. I have also now decided to only shop there, it's also good exercise to take the kids up for a walk to the butcher and a chance to educate them about good food and where it comes from.
I am only 23 and none of my friends shop at a butcher, it's not something our generation tends to do...June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

We have been going to a local butcher for the last few months. The quality is amazing and the price is absolutely reasonable! Some of the meat is actually cheaper than the supermarket - plus it tastes better! I don't buy any more beef, lamb, or pork at the supermarket, and have been considering swapping over to the butcher for chicken as well - we just haven't tried it from the butcher's yet.MSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0

As I said in a previous post, I am lucky to have such a smashing butchers locally. My sis-in-law who lives in Bromley about 40 miles away and that is quite a large town, it has no butchers whatsoever there, and she has to buy from Sainsburys , it hasn't even got a Tescos there, nearest one is a bus ride away. She usually waits until she visits me, and then on the day she goes home stocks up on meat to carry home with her in her bags. I also have a wonderful fresh fish shop where I live, and the fish is so fresh its almost wriggling ! I only live about 30 minutes from Whitstable though, and can drive there if I want fish just caught that day from the market by the quay. I must admit I did buy a whole salmon from Sainsburys last Saturday only because it had been reduced to £13.00 and it was very large. The fishmonger ,bless him, did fillet it for me and I have almost a fortnight's meals safely tucked in my freezer now. Plus of course I paid for it with my nectar points so it cost me nothing. But that was a one off .0

I'm veggie but my oh and ds are meat eaters, we always use the local butchers we think it works out cheaper in the long run, the chicken breasts are really big from the butchers they only need one each instead of two from a supermarket, and bacon from the butchers is almost the same size when it comes out of the pan as when it goes in, unlike supermarket bacon which shrivels up to nothing and i end up cooking twice as much.
Our local butchers are so friendly, they know i don't eat meat, and that i don't really know whether i'm buying the right thing but they always serve me well and have never sold me anything duff.Be kinder than necessary because we do not know the battles that someone else may face

Yes 'All Hail The Bacon' :rotfl:
It's 100% better from a butcher, that laser-cut stuff from supermarkets is not bacon IMO.
Saying that, Morrison's butcher counter do an excellent flavoured bacon, and it doesn't shrivle up like prepacked garbage does.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

In my experience it's worth paying for the better quality from the butcher as it's normally less fatty. Less fat = more meat.
Sometimes buying the cheaper stuff is false economy as you need twice as much!:j Baby boy arrived 22nd August 2012 :j
