meat from butchers V supermarket

Everyone's butcher and supermarket is different. However, some people rave about the meat in our local butcher compared to the nearby supermarket.
In fact, the butcher supplies the supermarket and the meat is identical, although there is more variety and cheaper cuts at the butcher's shop.0 -

Me too, but won't get into that debate again! lol, read the first two pages before realizing the prices were so out dated!I will save my tesco £1 savings stamps this year! .......so far = £50 (full card#1)
Card #2 £6. I will not be skint at Chistmas this year!
Total £560 -
Westin Gourmet look good but I dislike sites that aren't clear about the cost per pound or per kilo. I think their prices are expensive from what I usually but it's difficult to work it out?
I've never tried them but https://www.eastlondonsteak.co.uk/ were recommended to me, their products are very clearly priced and I think there prices are quite reasonable (and not just steak as their name suggests!). They have mutton joints which I'm going to try and most of their meat looks well priced.
We've mainly bought our meat from Costco but since we moved away we're not going back there often enough. We have two very good butchers close by but I do find them a bit expensive.
I try to avoid supermarket meal as I think it's expensive, I'll buy Lidl meat if it's yellow stickered and I will buy some of the cheap joints that the supermarkets have on offer.Piglet

Yes I just realised they merged my thread. Pretty annoyed to be honest it the first thread I've started in months and the one I've been merged to is so outdated!"More people would learn from their mistakes if they weren't so busy denying them." - Harold J. Smith:cool:0 -
Hubby was in town last week and popped into the butcher wanting some big pork chops!
Butcher kindly went out back for a big loin and chopped into 6 whacking big chops - we reckon about 12oz each.
oh yummy so big we had to slow roast them, but well worth it, I can't begin to tell you how good the fat was - nom nom.
yeah they were a bit (cough) expensive but compared to the thin tasteless bit you get in the supermarket, they were well worth it as a rare treat.
Also he got a bag of sausages for about £5 and I think we got 3 x 6 sausage meals in the freezer and they are a million times better than any shop ones.
OP please don't be scared to ask your butcher for advise, they are more than happy to help you and have a laugh, I do miss the banter as I just don't have the time nowadays.

OK. Went to the butcher and the poultry shop today. This is what I bought. The butcher was awfully expensive I thought:
Poultry shop £17.00
Large whole chicken (Not sure of the weight - I want to say 2.5kg ?)
3 steak burgers (just over 100g each)
1 pork and apple burger (just over 100g)
6 steak sausages
6 venison sausages
I was happy enough with that. However.......
Butcher £50.31
rolled brisket (1kg) £12.59
ham shank £3.74
steak mince (900g) £10.07
5 x chicken breasts (1.038kg) £14.26
casserole steak (780g) £9.65
What do you think? Way more expensive than sm but probably worth it. But not the chicken breasts - he warned me they were pricey and I only got them at the butcher because I forgot to get them from the poultry place.0 -
Yep that looks pricey to me, even for good meat.
Boned brisket at the East London Steak Co is £7 per kilo http://www.eastlondonsteak.co.uk/braising-cuts/rolled-brisket.htmlPiglet

Ouch that's expensive, I remember when brisket used to be poor mans beef
(that's why it was used as a pot roast), but then I also remember when breast of lamb was cheap - not any more.
We got a supermarket chicken last week for about £4 but it was a small one, this week they wanted £9 for a so called large one!
We opted for a frozen half leg of lamb for £6 instead.
btw the only time I've got really nice large and tasty (not full of water) chicken breasts was from a mobile butcher at the market - sadly we no longer have a local market - grrrrr.

Just read through this thread and thought I would have a look to see if there are any online butchers here. Found this one:

I think their weekly prices are maybe a bit too high for me...that's the Cotswolds for you! £30 a week is the cheapest. I normally by Tesco 3 for £10 meat and it lasts a week.Just when I'm about to make ends meet, somebody moves the ends0
