  • We like Morrisons, but there is a big butchers in Sedgefield Called George Bolams and their stuff is great. But you have to have a lot of freezer space!!!! They also sell cheap, fruit and veggies and baked goods.

Small world! I've just been there this morning - it's fab!
  • We don`t buy a lot of meat as OH is a veggie and I tend to eat what he eats most days, but I do buy bacon from the farmer`s market(nice quality, lasts forever AND is cheaper than supermarkets) and some bits from the supermarket ( prefer Sainsbury`s - never ever touching Asda again for meat ,long story) , but nothing fancy , mainly gammon joints and chicken breasts.

Local butcher is really nice but pricey , would certainly use it more if could afford it.

:)I buy all my meat from the butchers on the local market, its cheaper and they are happy to serve you and let you pick out the piece that you want - they'll pick it up and turn it over to show you the underside so you can see exactly what you're paying for ...nothing more frustrating than buying 'lean' prepacked meat to discover a large lump of gristle artfully concealed underneath.

Also I can buy just the number of sausages or slices of bacon that I want and if I ask they'll also tell me the best way to cook it and will suggest more economical cuts for casseroles etc. Mainly stock local and British produce....and they don't look down their nose if you only buy the cheaper cuts :)

They will slice liver finely or dice meat for you and give you pieces of fat for roasting joints and dog bones free of charge.

Not very healthy - but they do big tubs of pork dripping and bags of hm pork scratchings for a £1 a go - naughty but nice!

Lovely meat It keeps better than the prepacked stuff and doesn't go slimy

The butchers in my town aren't very good. One is very expensive and the other is more reasonable but the meat goes off within a day of buying it.

I normally buy from Morrisons, Aldi or Sainsburys. Will look into online butchers though.

    Hi chirpychick,

As your thread has dropped down the board I've added it to the existing thread discussing meat from the butchers versus meat from the supermarket.

Our butcher's sausages are so lean i have to remember to grease the pan! One chap's sole job is to make steak and mince pies (we have the steak cos the mince are a wee bit salty for our tastes). They may be a bit dearer than the SM but the constant queue speaks volumes.

  • Hi all, I'm on a money saving mission so you'll probably get sick of me asking questions and for advice. Hubby likes to have meat with every evening meal which is a pain in the !!!! when I'm trying to cut back. Everyone has told me to use the butchers which I did last week and I bought 8 tomatoe sausages, stewing steak, 500mg of beef mince and 3 chicken breasts it came to 18.30 which I thought expensive there must be a cheaper way, HELP
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!
    JUST LOVES THE O/S BOARD
  • That sounds a bit high.
Our local does £5 sausages about 20 all nice and meaty too.
    Mince/casserole meat is about £4 a lb.
Breasts are always expensive but sometimes you can get a deal - maybe
    5lb for a tenner.
Could you not get a whole chicken and chop it into portions?
Having said that my hubby went of roast chicken for ages saying it isn't a proper dinner (tastless) but that's what we are having tomorrow as a weekday roast instead of sunday (that's ok apparently)
Grrrr and they they moan about the cost of shopping.
    Good luck
    xx
