We are lucky enought to have a farm shop for veg near us and one for meat and veg a 20 min drive away. The local veg last twice as long as sm veg so even though it might be slightly dearer it works out cheaper in the long run. Meat is dearer but i can get a large joint of silverside beef for around £18 and feed 4 to 8 us Sunday dinner, meat and tattie pie Mon, and stew and yorkshires Tue and stew and dumps wed. Or freeze eqivalent beef for later. Thats 20 portions and can usually be stretched to 24 (although it it for GC tea) portions. I call that good value. I have to add though that i tried some chicken breast portions from Aldi because of recommendations on this forum and i was amazed that they are just like the farm shop and not other SM. I don't find them pumped with water and the taste is exactly the same. The sausage from the farmshop is outstanding as is the minced steak/extra lean beef. I have used Aldis and although good it is not as good as farm shop.
I have to add that going to farm shops has saved a lot as i don't buy those bargains and extras from the SM that i don't really need. I think the lightbulb moment was when i went to SM for milk and ended up spending £20. Now i am strict with lists and stick to them, we eat healthier and food bill has been cut, meals are planned out and i cringe at the amount of rubbish i used to buy and didn't seem to have meals in.

If anyone is in Worcester or surrounds then Potters Marinated Meats in Rainbow Hill is very good. They do free marination and have loads of ideas for meals.

Where do you buy your meat and what is cheaper?

It is a drive to our nearest proper butcher, but we do have a Morrisons in walking distance who have a butcher.

Im just wondering which is cheaper as I have always brought A3da's smart price meat but have read a lot of people buy theirs from the butcher.

    TIA :)

  • It really depends on your butcher. My local is very good quality, but posh with prices to match. As an example, topside of beef there is about £16/kg where I can get it on offer in supermarkets for £4/kg. As good as it is, the butcher's meat is not worth four times the cost. So for me, I buy supermarket meat. The exception I make to this is lamb from the farmer's market, as it is cheaper than supermarket lamb.

It's just a case of shopping around your local area to find the best combination of price and quality that suits you.
  • Mu butcher is expensive too so I buy at supermarkets

  • Our butcher is cheaper than the offers in the SMs for things like chicken breasts and bacon, probably a little dearer on some other cuts but the quality is SO much higher that I refuse to buy supermarket meat. The only time I do so is if I forget the time on a Saturday and get there after they close; I then resort to the dreaded slime of supermarket meat _pale_
Butcher = much, much fresher (I have worked in a supermarket and there is a long date on the meats there...)
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.
  • If I had a decent butcher locally I'd go there. I used to only use the butcher when I lived at my last house as it was cheaper and better quality in general, but the butchers near me are not so nice cuts of meat. I tend to get my cheap, basic meat from Lidl and buy my decent meat from Morrisons. I don't touch meat from any of the other supermarkets, never as good.

Our Morrisons has very good quality meat - reasonable prices and mostly British.

The on-site butchers are also very helpful.

This may vary from shop-to-shop but give them a try.

My butcher is pretty expensive , but the meat is very good and not only do I know what farm it comes from I know what breed as well , plus i know where and how it is slaughtered . I would never buy meat from a supermarket .

That's the best option if you have a good local butcher. Not all of us do.
