I would much rather buy my meat from a good butcher, but I've only recently moved to this area so am not too familiar with the local butchers, greengrocers etc.
Can anyone recommend a good butcher and/or greengrocer in the Irvine area please?0 -
Butchers every time.
I use the butchers that stand at our fortnightly farmers market. You should see the queues to buy their meat. They can tell you all about their products - having raised the animals themselves and no, I don't find them any more expensive. There is no waste as it all tastes so good. We have cut down on the amount of meat we eat and we also try to buy local vegatables as much as possible, the whole plate of food tastes much better.Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -

Try https://www.bigbarn.co.uk - its a really great site, I now get locally grown/reared food delivered to my door straight from the farm! :T:heart2: Mumma to DD 13yrs, DD 11yrs & DS 3 yrs. :heart2:0 -
Local Farmers Market, good local Butcher or Farm Shop. I shop in a farm shop and do a quarterly shop, buying mince, chicken, shin (excellent stewing cut), joints, chops etc. I usually spend between £100-150 pounds a time. Even looking at the top side that works out as £11.54 a week on meat for a family of 3.
What scares me about Tesco is 1 in every £8.00 spent in this country is spent with Tesco! Phew with that power you would think they could treat their suppliers better.
Maybe not.................You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.

Got to be the Butcher, all this pre-packed supermarket stuff is pretty average and often smells pretty unpleasant. All supermarkets are interested in is getting meat which all looks the same colour and weighs pretty much the same piece for piece.0

Thanks Kelinik. Great site with lots of information on local producers. I'm going to give my local farmers market a try next Saturday.0 -
Butcher every time for me, too. This is especially true for roasting cuts - supermarkets are obsessed with beef being red, which indicates it's not been hung long enough, so will be tough.
I'd rather eat lentil curry twice a week and have good meat at the weekend, than mediocre meat every day.

where are you exactly? we use Littlewoods in Heaton Chapel (just off the A6); Andy and his sons make all their own sausages (25 varieties), they have products designed for the Slimming World diet, the least fattiest mince in Manchester (actually clinically proven), etc. We're looking at buying out Rochdale way and we'll still be going to Littlewoods.Payment a day challenge:
