I went to a butchers yesterday again, and purchased ONE chicken breast.

    £2.36.

    Pretty expensive :O!

Mind you, it was very big and thick, I cut it into two and put the other half in the freezer. Last night's meal was delicious!

Hi -I find the butchers chicken breasts are at least twice the size of those at the supermarket so always ask them to slice them in half for me (lengthways) = 2 chicken breasts for the price of one and much tastier! CB

Blimey that is expensive. You can buy 6 for £4.99 in a supermarket.

Maybe you can, but as I mentioned regarding the bacon in an earlier post, you can't use number of items as a comparison between butchers and supermarket products, but need to do it by weight instead.

You will also find that a single chicken breast from a decent butcher will easily feed two people, whereas I found you needed two breasts per person when I tried the ones from a supermarket ;) (they shrink after all the water has exuded from them!)

So using these examples, I could feed 3 people @ £1.18 a head from the butcher, or £1.66 a head from the supermarket. I know which one I'd prefer to do :D

I buy the Iceland frozen ones which are usually on offer. We usually have 1 each of those for a meal and I havn't had any complaints yet. I dont have a decent butcher around here so sometimes I have to put up with supermarket stuff.

I cant remember the last time I went into a butchers but it has to be at least 5 years. I was thinking though would a burcher or a big supermarket work out cheaper? I dont buy that nuch meat- say some mince, sausages and sometimes a roast of some kind. There arent a lot of butchers here as they have been priced out of the shopping centre itself but there are 2 about 2 miles away so wondered if it was worth a special journey or not?

May or may not be cheaper. But a good butcher is worth going to for the quality of the meat, the expertise of the butcher and the different cuts that they offer, especially the old fashioned cuts that are cheap and tasty. Also to support a local Artisian rather than supermarket water injected goods!

I agree, i always go to the butcher - lot better quality and taste.
Had a beef joint from tesco's recently and was not impressed at all - and it was one of their so called Finest

Support the local business - try Lamb shanks normally about £1.50 each - one per person in a stew - lovely :T
    :j I'm keen :j

never heard of lamb shanks but will have a look about.Dont think tesco do them LOL! are they very fatty though. My husband is really fussy with his meat and when he cooks he takes off every bit of fat. Mind you I suppose if they are in a stew I could cool it then skim off the fat?

Butcher every time, the quality if far superior but the cost seems less. I overhead our butcher saying to a customer that they did not have a particular cut that day because he was not happy with the meat delivered and sent it back.

I do not know how much longer we will have a butcher with the ever growing stampede of supermarkets.
No Matter what you do there will be critics.

Try and find a good butcher though as a dewhurst or the like you may as well buy it in the supermarket.
