hi we have a fruit/veg fish stall and normal market twice a week where i get my fish fruit and veg but only butchers shops and it seems quite expensive the only thing i buy is mince i was going to buy my fresh turkey at christmas there but it would have cost nearly £50 to feed 10-15 so i bought a fresh one at somerfields for £25 same size plus son works p/time there so got 20% off but thankyou i will start looking aroundTicklemouse wrote:loopylass - do you have a market nearby? If you have, go and look where the queues are. They may not neccessarily be at the cheapest stall, but you'll get an idea of who has the best meat/best value for money. The stall I go to isn't the cheapest (but still far cheaper than Tesco's) but invariably you have to queue and if you get there after lunch, a lot of their meat has gone.
Eg on my mum's market, there are 2 fish stalls. A 'proper' one and one in a little trailer. The trailer fishmonger has queues sometimes 15 deep - that tells you something about his waresYou can always hang around and listen to how much other people are paying for what - and make a list of prices from your local supermarket so you can compare properly. Also remember, that the butcher may be more expensive on a couple of items, but overall, most are cheaper.

my hubby is a butcher by trade (he still works in the meat buisness but is a superviser rather than handling meat) so he can bone and roll etc do everything a butcher can as he worked for 16 years as a butcher where he works he can get cheap bacon so any meal suggestions with bacon would be nice anyway thankyou all for taking your time and helping me as i seem to be going wrong somewhere0

Bacon pudding! Its great! Make a suet pastry, cut up an onion some mushrooms and the bacon, mix together. I tie mine in a muslin cloth and steam in the steamer - really easy and the whole family love it. You just serve veg with it, you really don't need potatoes as well, jut lots of lovely gravy!!0

Leek bacon and potato pie!
About half a pound of bacon with a pound of sliced leeks, sweat both off in a saucepan with a little oil, add a tablespoon of flour and stir in, then add about half a pint of milk until it's sauce consistency. Top this with mashed potato and brown in the oven for about 30 minutes. Lovely!Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

I went to a butchers yesterday again, and purchased ONE chicken breast.
£2.36.
Pretty expensive :O!
Mind you, it was very big and thick, I cut it into two and put the other half in the freezer. Last night's meal was delicious! Can I afford to buy? Mortgage Affordability Calculator
