    Hi Ash,

I was in a similar situation recently and asked for advice on here too, see THIS THREAD to read about it. My cat is responding well to medication now.

It could be lots of things but the best way to find out is to get your cat to the vets as soon as you can.

(((hugs))) to you, I know how worrying it is when this happens

No, it doesn't sound awful. I'd only had my cat a few weeks when she had her first fit and hadn't sorted her insurance in time. Blood tests and meds are not too financially crippling.

There are number of things that can cause fits so you really do need to get him to the vets so they can start checking.

if it is epilepsy and it is diagnosed as such tomorrow, then epilepsy will be excluded from any insurance policy you take out. Racy Red might be able to help you, her lovely little cat has epilepsy

petplan, axa, halifax, M&S and animal friends all offer 'for life' polcies, but they willnot now cover whatever thisilllness is. they will cover everything else that might go wrong though.

    good luck x

what lowis said is right, any pre-existing medical conditions wont be covered by your insurance so you would have to pay for medication each month yourself. i dont think there are any insurance companies that will insure for pre-existing medical conditions an failure to mention them when you apply and then claim for them at a later date would be consider fraud.

As for a general insurance company to use, Axa is a good one as several other companies are under-written by them so Axa works out cheaper.

Ash please try not to worry, I was the same and thought it was going to cost me a fortune I couldn't afford, but it hasn't.

If your cat has not already been insured for 2 weeks then this condition will not be covered.

The rescue centre I got my cat from do not charge me for her treatment, but I ask what the costs are and make a donation to cover them whenever I can. I know I'm very, very fortunate to have their help and support.

Blood Tests, at cost, about £22 a time. There will be a few of these until the diagnosis is made and any medication is monitored, the number of tests needed should slow down then.

Medication, this will depend on the drugs needed once the diagnosis is made. I think mine cost about £15 per month. If the diagnosis is for epilepsy then I don't think you can buy Phenobarbitol online - I've not found it anyway.

If you are on benefits etc is there a local PDSA or animal charity vet somewhere close? If not, phone round your local vets and ask upfront what they expect your costs to be for consultations, blood screening and drugs if it is epilepsy. It sounds hard-nosed, but if your cat is young then you are maybe talking about a lot of years of treatment - see if you can negotiate something as this is possibly going to be a regular source of income for the vet.

I was quoted some quite high prices for initial tests by some of the local commercial vets when they thought the cat was insured, but I think that also included tests for brain injury and other complicated stuff as my cat had had a head injury a few months before the fits started.

But get the diagnosis first so you know what you are dealing with.

    MEDICAL ADVICE

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: Sorry, giving or asking for medical advice is not permitted on this forum as it’s not what this site is about. While discussing medical insurance policies, cheaper ways to see consultants, cashback for alternative health treatments and how to get specific medication cheaper (legally) are all perfectly acceptable we ask you specifically not to discuss what to do in the event of certain medical problems (please see this rule on the Health Board).
